MLB 2017: The Yankees are dead, Yankees burn in hell

Isn't an inconsistent strike zone one of the charms of baseball?

For a lot of people, yes, which has always confused me. People who insist on human fallibility and missed calls being a Good and Necessary part of the game make no sense to me.

When it goes from an occasional bad call to being a running topic that can affect the outcomes of games on a regular basis, it needs to be looked at.

It's probably due to the advent of HD TV, the on-screen strike zone and us as viewers being able to really see the madness, that has us up in arms the way we are.

A good story about the bean-ball.

Carl Mays won 209 games over 15 years, with a 2.92 ERA, and pitched in the World Series in four different years. He got some Hall of Fame votes in 1958. What he is mostly remembered for, however, is throwing the pitch that killed Ray Chapman in an August game in 1920.

Was the mound closer to the plate in 1920? I know it was at some point in the history of baseball.

Admittedly, I would be more accepting of umpires' mistakes if so many of them weren't attention seekers trying to make the game about them instead of two teams. Every fanbase knows who Joe West, Angel Hernandez, CB Bucknor, Laz Diaz, Eric Cooper, Dan Iossogna, and Hunter Wendelstadt are because they have all inserted themselves into the game at one time or another. People still talk about the time that Hernandez stared down Steve McMichael.

60 feet, six inches has been the rule ever since something like 1892 or 1893. The old Knickerbocker rules never specified exactly where the pitcher's mound had to be, so there was a lot of variance, and it wasn't until the founding of MLB in 1869 that there was an actual codified position. They kept tweaking it throughout the 1870s and '80s, though, trying to find a balance between pitching and offense. Outside of that, the only changes to the mound have been in 1904 (when a maximum height of 15 inches was established), 1950 (when they said the mound had to be exactly 15 inches high, no more and no less, because teams like the Indians and Yankees were doing a lot of mound fuckery) and 1969 (when they lowered the mound to 10 inches as a response to the Dodgers breaking baseball).

I've gotta dig out a book I have called The Pitcher. I could've sworn the mound was moved around later than that, but it's been a long time since I actually read the book.

Yeah, I was pretty sure the height of it has been changed a few times too.

Fun fact of the day: Joey Gallo is batting below the Mendoza line, yet is still managing an OPS of .905.

Well, that's what happens when all you hit is a ton of home runs and strike out so much.

Yeah, yeah, I know. I'm just expressing my earlier frustrations about him from when he was on my fantasy team. :p

Red Sox owner John Henry wants to change the name of Yawkey Way to something not named after a gigantic racist.

He wants to do this now? While I agree that all symbols of racism, bigotry and intolerance need to be done away with, I'm a little perplexed as to why this is suddenly an issue. Is Henry really outraged because Yawkey was a racist, or is he outraged because people are angry about the events in Charlottesville? I find this sort of behavior somewhat disengenuous.

While I get what you're saying, shouldn't it be enough that he wants to change it now?

Miami-Dade County has informed Derek Jeter's ownership group that it will not be permitted to remove the Dinger Machine. Thank God.

Probably related to union kickbacks from when they built of that monstrosity. Or it's where Jimmy Hoffa really is.

Could they get around the ruling by putting a tarp over it?
