Agreed. Trek isn't renowned for getting it's shows off the ground quickly

Fuller, on the other hand, is known for exactly that - which is good, cause until recently they tended not to last last much longer than a season or two (if even that long).

Hmmm...fascinating, and sobering read, if not unexpected. There seems to be responsibility on both sides. While Fuller's ideas would have been a little closer to traditional canon as we know it, an anthology series would have probably been too expensive, as awesome as it would have been.

I never liked the anthology series idea. An important part of the Star Trek experience for me has always been growing fond of the characters and following them on a years long journey.

I heartily agree. One of my favorite aspects of any Star Trek series is how its setting feels like home over time and its characters feel like family. I'm really looking forward to seeing Discovery's more serialized storyline, but I'm concerned that this familiar aspect will be lost in seasons with fewer episodes. I'd rather have more episodes, lower production values and exhausted actors! :D

How do you figure? Because he wanted the uniforms to look somewhat closer to TOS? For all we know he might have strayed far away from the precious canon.
In one of the early interviews Fuller admitted they will be reimagining things. And that uniforms will be a "happy transporter accident" i.e. a combination of previous designs. Which is what the current Discovery uniforms are. So how much closer to canon is debatable.

Edit: tossing out Fuller's complex story is more concerning. But I won't judge yet.

Just a guess. I'm no strict canon partisan, but I just figured his tastes in storytelling might skew that way. I could have been totally wrong. Only the parties involved know for sure.

That was frankly the least interesting part, to me anyway. I was more interested in getting some insight into how it looked like both CBS and Fuller bore responsibility for the split. It seemed like a pretty balanced take. Nobody seemed like they were at fault really, just that it was an incompatible relationship.

I will say that I like his perspective on what really matters. It must have been hard to leave that show, no matter who initiated that decision. He might not have gotten the show he wanted, but he was proud to have forwarded representation by creating the characters he did.

Really like the idea for an anthology series, but on the other hand I wouldn't have liked having a crew around for just one season... Imagine that would have been the case with TNG or DS9! Maybe the anthology idea isn't completely out the window... Maybe this was what Meyer was referring to a few months back..?

I imagine, from the CBS perspective, it seems unnecessarily expensive. Why go to the cost of building new sets and costumes and props every season when they could use the same ones over and over?

Personally, I'm not a fan of the single-season anthology idea. At this point, Trek *is* an anthology show, spread out over 50 years. If the powers-that-be want a post-TNG show, make a post-TNG show.

After seeing his show concept, I honestly think his leaving was a blessing in disguise and CBS made the right choice. An anthology series is intriguing, absolutely, but I don't think it would fit Trek at all. It's a little too out there for my tastes. I want to grow with a cast of characters and get invested in them and their lives over the course of several seasons.

Since TOS was treated like an anthology show with a steady cast one interpretation would be that Fuller was bringing the series back to its true origins.
There's a big difference between an episodic series and an anthology series. You weren't getting a new crew and a new setting in TOS seasons 2 and 3.

I mean, I'm all for any Trek series that is well-made and well told. An anthology just wouldn't be my first choice.

Not gonna lie, I'm happier with the new-look reboot Discovery, as opposed to "muted versions of the traditional tricolor uniform" and the entire look being updated in the same unimaginative manner as the phasers and tricorders.

Also not crazy about the idea of an anthology. It sounds like it's directed at super diehards who want continuity porn to fill in the gaps between series' and movies. I'm not totally against it, but I'm far more hopeful about what we're getting.
