The Action Figure and Toy Collecting and Discussion Thread!

Thanks for asking Astra!...The backgound 'Okudagram' bridge display graphics are being displayed via USB flash drive onto my UltraHD TV screen. They were scanned from 'Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise' resource (my personal favorite) and then colorized with photoshop.
What, that sounds like a lot of work but the effect is really nice! I never thought about using screens before, that is an interesting idea. I either use photo cardboards that are available at my local craft shop (but of course they don't have any space ships, more like grass and sand and cobble stones and sky etc.) or self-printed pictures.

I shall look for that Guide, that sounds like an interesting thing to have!

@TOMFAN the repainted Picard does look so much better! Do you repaint all of them? The faces aren't that bad, I agree, but I don't like the shiny plastic look overall, which makes them look more like toys. Therefore I prefer the bigger DST line - also because they fit in size with many other lines I have.

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas or whatever else holiday you celebrate!

My big Christmas present: American Girl Rebecca! She came with an extra outfit and Hanukkah items.

So I stumbled about the action figures of "Gotham" that come with some awesome backgrounds and I figured I should at least have a look into the series before I buy them (not that buying figures just for the accessories has stopped me before *cough* "Primeval" *cough*). And now I'm kinda hooked. Anyone else here collecting these?

I want to introduce you to the figures of wave 1, which are Det. James "Jim" Gordon, Selina "Cat" Kyle and Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin.

So, Jim Gordon who one day becomes Commissioner if you know your "Batman". I think they did the face very well.

The picture above shows the double jointed knees which seem to be standard these days and make them very flexible. If I think back at my first "Stargate" figures that did have no knees at all... (although it fit Jack's character who always complained about a stiff knee LOL)

Gordon has many joints, the hips, elbows and shoulders turn into all directions but the best part are the feet which also turn around everywhere. My other figures would topple over if I tried this wide stance but he has still his soles flat to the ground:

Even his tie is sculpted seperatedly. I read a lot of people bought this figure to use as any kind of suited figure with a headswap. So if you need one, he's the guy!

And the jacket is not in the way of him sitting properly which is always a plus:

He comes with this awesome environment:

Next Selina Kyle, who will become Catwoman one day. I think she's rather cute! I originally did not want to watch this series as I was afraid it would be similar to "Smallville" - too many teenagers and high school drama. But both her and Bruce are actually really good and the rest are mostly adult characters.

She comes with a bottle of milk but this is not why I got her - this is:

Put together with Gordon's half you get this. All pieces can be seperated for easy storage:

Finally, The Penguin. From Batman movies you may know him as an old small thick guy, but I really like this version of him. Very interesting portrait. He reminds me a bit of the Simm!Master and Sherlock's Moriarty. Originally I did not want to get him, as I was not interested in the dock he comes with, but the actor's interpretation of the character has won me over:

He comes with some extra hands to hold the accessories, the umbrella and the apple. I just watched the pilot a couple of days ago and can see where all the other things - Gordon's trash cans and Selina's milk bottle and also the pier - are coming from, but I can't remember the significance of the apple right now. Guess I'll have to watch again.

This is the pier from the finale of the pilot:

And this is the whole wave 1. The fourth wave just got announced so you can bet there will be more and I already have all kind of ideas how to use the backgrounds for my other figures.

Looks amazing! For my money, those Playmates figures are still better likenesses than most of the DST ones. They might have inaccurate proportions and caricatured faces, but they capture the personality of the character far better than the static DST statues.

Thanks!

For the time that they were made, and the price they were sold for, I think they are great, and as you say, they really capture the personality of the characters well.

I've always found the more modern figures a bit of a let down, as they all seem to have a body that is based on a 6 foot, muscled, athelete!

I agree, the shiny plastic isn't ideal, but at the time, no one really did anything different!

Love the festive Tardis! Merry Christmas (even if it is a couple of days too late!)

Those Gotham figures look great, the amount of articulation is especially impressive, and the stands/dioramas, are fab!

Pukaski looks terrific too - it always bothered me that Playmates went for the lazy headswap instead of doing the character justice.

I got for christmas a Neon X drone.... You can have it sit on your hand it's not big but it's way fun but lots of crashes as I've never flown a quad before.

Maybe it was too late for them to redesign the action figure after she'd decided she wasn't going to wear the regular uniform.

So how tall are these? 6" or 7"? The fire escape looks too low, but if they are " it should be perfect for 4" figures.

CCC.

Maybe it was too late for them to redesign the action figure after she'd decided she wasn't going to wear the regular uniform.
Except the figure came out years after she'd left the show - I think it would have been around 1994 or 1995. Playmates were just too cheap to adjust the tooling.

Or they based it on that one early publicity shot where she wore the regular uniform.

Love the festive Tardis! Merry Christmas (even if it is a couple of days too late!)
Thank you! Hope you had a nice holiday!

The only other one I've done so far is Dr Pulaski...
I haven't watched TNG yet so I don't know her but again the repainted version looks so much better. If you have the time and patience, you definitely should stick with that. You certainly have talent. Taking the shine off alone improves it much. And the face make-up is much more subtle as well. Well done!

Yes, I'm really happy about my haul, and have been playing a bit already. Need to pace myself to not buy it all at once again as I did last year with the TOS figures, which sent my bank account deep into the red ;)

Happy Hanukkah from Rebecca!
Happy Hanukkah! (Is it over already? I have no idea, sorry) Awww, that little candle holder! So cute!

More like 7". Yeah, sadly it is a tad too low, but if I have him not standing upright but in action pose with bent knees it looks better. I also plan to use it for Flash, Arrow, even Star Trek when Kirk and Spock were stranded in New York... the possibilities are endless! I think it would go greatly with your stuff!

Here's what else I intend to buy.

Wave 2 (beware the dumpster is not included): http://tinyurl.com/zatd7j7

Wave 3 (the dumpster makes a reappearance) http://tinyurl.com/zajmk68

Or do you maybe need a police holding cell? http://tinyurl.com/zj3s8ut

Or a chair of an evil doc? I want to sit Kirk into this: http://tinyurl.com/zv7gqzj

The last two are from wave 4 which is not out yet, the others are.

I already re-created some scenes from the pilot.

Selina feeding some street cats:

Jim defending himself with the lid of a trash can (the lids in the display cannnot be taken off, I bought this from Wrestling figures)

Jim being ordered to shoot the Penguin at the dock. Will he or won't he?

A repainted Picard figure from Playmates toys:

Before & After:

The only other one I've done so far is Dr Pulaski, who I thought was a great character, and an absolutely terrific actress. It's a shame she wasn't onboard from the very start, as I think she would've been received much better, by the audience, and the other cast members.

After:

Wow! These look great! You have done a great job, that's a great likeness on both of them. :bolian:

That's a great collection you have there! Gotham really has some nice figures! I might have to check them out… for the kids of course! ;)

I haven't gotten new action figures in a while. I'm planning on getting some of the Star Wars "black series" 3 3/4" Rogue One characters.

Kor

I bought myself a little present off ebay- the Minimates Black Knight. He was originally packaged with the Enchantress, but I didn't want her.

He even has a hairpiece. LOL!
