Our first look at Ghost In The Shell. It looks very strange, very stately, actually quite arthouse in style. It looks like a good reimagining of the GitS world in live-action form. Some "fans" have been hating on this from the start, but these teasers make me very optimistic!

Get hyped!

EDIT: Here is a fan edit that turns the teasers into a trailer with music from the first anime movie:

The episode with the out-of-control multi-ped tank would probably lend itself to a movie treatment the most. (Testation)

This came up on my youtube page. It's another teaser collection, and the only new one is the first one. It is impressive to see that great scene from the anime movie done in live action.

Coverage of the GitS movie is yet to get started, really, but I found a couple of interesting clips:

A short interview with Scarlett and behind-the-scenes footage. It looks like they are shooting somewhere Asian, but they are actually in New Zealand, of all places.

It seems like a lot of fanboys are butthurt over the casting of Scarlett Johansson (or about anyone in Hollywood daring to adapt an anime, really) - but it seems the Japanese themselves have a more thoughtful attitude:

If anything, it seems to be more faithful to the original anime than the SAC series, especially the camomode fight sequence. I don't want Scarlett Johansson to become typecast but I look forward to her reprising the role of the Major if this movie succeeds at the box office.

This may be just me, but I can't help but think the thermoptic camouflage outfit doesn't look right without the chunky visor thing. Without it she just looks like she's wearing some creepy flesh coloured doll suit...which while not totally inappropriate just isn't as cool without the visor. At the risk of resorting to an overused term: it's iconic! ;)

I agree this is definitely a change, but maybe they were worried it would look silly IRL, or that they'd have to explain it to the audience.
ALSO, when Motoko goes invisible in the opening scene (falling from the building), she's not wearing any special gear, so it's inconsistent that she would need to wear it later.

The clips from the live action movie look very promising. They are clearly being faithful to the original movie. Can't wait.

Looks like they are getting it....
And most Animé characters do not look like a Japanese person.
But that aside....I don't like it in English at all!

IMDb's cast list is rather incomplete at the moment. It seems they have quite a diverse line-up, so I think they are going to show future Japan as more multicultural.
I am glad they have a Japanese guy playing Aramaki, but I'm kind of disappointed they didn't get Ron Perlman to play Batou...

If you don't like it in English, you can wait to order the Japanese dub (that's what I did with Animatrix). :)

The scenes they've recreated from the movie look very faithful, but I don't think it will be a straight remake. Some of the scenes we've been shown weren't in the first movie (not that I recall, anyway), plus I think they probably wouldn't want to use the tank fight as the climactic scene. The bit where the tank grabs Motoko by her head risks looking silly in live action.
As we get closer to the release, I hope we'll hear more about the story influences. I'm curious about how much they went back to the original manga.

Looks like publicity is slowly ramping up. The first minute of this is the featurette, the rest is the blipverts we've seen already. The featurette isn't cut very well, but it is interesting to get Oshii's opinion on the production: he says "Scarlett Johansson playing Motoko, from beginning to end, has gone above and beyond my expectations for the role," and "I'm sure this will be the most gorgeous film in the series so far."
We also see glimpses of them shooting the shell assembly sequence from the beginning of the first anime movie. It looks like Motoko will be sans genitals as in the anime (I never understood how she could have a threesome if she didn't have the "equipment" - I think it was just put in as fan service).

I'm looking forward to it after seeing these new scenes. Some of the classic animes of the 80's and 90's have some pretty great stories that could and should be updated. Dump the creepy, outdated fan service and singing idol characters, and we could have some great films.

My dream job would be to be hired to update the original Macross series. Man, that show had some great ideas. Robotech was good, but I think I could do it better.

I'm sure some fans will complain if Motoko isn't walking around in her thong.

That would be a mega production! No way they could fit it into a movie. Maybe ask Ron Moore to give it a go?

I should mention that the thermoptic camo is taken directly from Neuromancer, which influenced GITS in several ways.

This really does look like it's going to be good. And surprisingly faithful.
