Rogue One (2016) [SW Anthology Series)

Which is something he's done before. It's like bringing in Tarentino to do a dialogue polish (ever seen Crimson Tide? Who do you think wrote in the pop culture references?) or that time Lucas hired Spielberg to work on the pre-vis for Anankin/Obi Wan fight in RotS.

It's not a sign the movie is in trouble, it's a sign they want to make sure it gets the best attention it deserves. Believe me, if things are even half as bad as some insist on then the studio wouldn't be bringing in a specialist to help the director, they'd be firing his arse and getting a replacement in ASAP and as I said, he wouldn't be allowed anywhere near their press events. Much less showing up dressed as a Stormtrooper to someone else's Q&A. These are not the actions of a troubled production. It's just what happens when a production is so good at keeping a lid on things, the clickbaiters will just start making it up.
Obviously, this is just a ruse to conceal the fact that the film is in trouble.

So it's basically the same as doing reshoots then?
They just brought in Gilroy coming in to lend a hand, not necessarily to fix a bad movie?
I'll be honest, I assumed it meant that Lucasfilm and/or Disney didn't like what was coming in and decided that Edward couldn't give them what they wanted, so they brought in someone who could.

Pretty much. There's an old saying in Hollywood: "a movie gets made three times: in the script, on the set and in the cut." Right now 'Rogue One' is getting made in the cut and one can imagine that a fresh pair of eyes (particularly a pair that had a hand in writing the script) can be enormously valuable to the director at this point.

If they are that unhappy with a director, then you'd see some much more drastic action taking place. Again, a Director who's supposedly been banished from the editing bay doesn't stand around in a Stormtrooper costume for 40 mins as a stunt at a convention. It's the same reason you don't leave soon to be fired disgruntled employees hanging around the workspace where they can cause trouble. It just doesn't happen.

Yeah, if Disney had and problems at all with Gareth Edwards he'd currently be persona non grata, not unlike Josh Trank.

Some of us curious about what the issues were, like me, aren't implying anything. We're simply curious to know what the issues were. Many of us would buy Blu-rays with the reshot/excised scenes; I would.

From what I've read of various movie productions over the years, in the VAST majority of cases, reshoots are almost entirely for lots of tiny little continuity shots or scenes where they didn't get the coverage they needed. Typically it's the kind of thing that only becomes clear in the early editing phase which is why most productions include it in the budget. It's expected.

Sometimes it's because they ran over-schedule on the initial shoot because of bad weather, illness or various other outside factors. Only very rarely is it because someone at the studio sees the dailies, doesn't like it and hits the panic button. In such cases, the director is almost always fired or "resigns of their own free will due to creative differences."

I have to say, people seem to have very short memories when it comes to this kind of thing as there were almost identical claims this time last year regarding TFA. That the film is in trouble and Disney are ordering reshoots. That the accident with Ford means they're going to change the ending. None of which turned out to be true.
It's just click bait sites trying to generate traffic. Ignore it.
If there's a real 'behind the scenes' story to be told, you won't find out about it until *after* the movie is out and probably, not even then.

I've realized for quite a while now that reshoots are not big deal, and it drives me crazy when people start panicking over them. They've been a regular part of movie making for ages now, and a lot of movies end up going back for some before their finished.

Click bait writers. Google searched reveal the following:
Since Disney ordered them and then Edwards was trying to explain it more, it seems to have been taken as a sign of a troubled production.

It's not, but the explanations lent fuel to the rumor mill fire.

I hadn't noticed before just now but the new Trooper designs are borderline overdesigned compared to the OG Trooper. I still like them but I'm not sure they really look like contemporaries from the same organization.

You know, the image around the one minute mark with Director Krennic with George Lucas's head photoshopped on is remarkably seamless.
