TOS Region 2 DVDs not remastered

Hi, new here so I hope I'm not duplicating any recent threads with this.

I wanted to start watching through all of Trek in chronological order from the beginning, starting on the 50th anniversary of original broadcast (corny I know!) but my TOS DVDs are remastered and I'm just not happy with them. I find them anachronistic and weird.

I've seen a couple of threads on here discussing where you can get hold of the original DVDs (2004 "clam-shells" look like the way to go) but I can't work out where to get these for Region 2 players. I don't have a BluRay player, so I don't want to get the BluRay versions.

Can anyone help?

Maybe try ebay or amazon's marketplace.

Or get a Bul-Ray player, they're not that expensive anymore, you can get a decent one for €50, that would be a good investment, you could get the original series in HD with its original effects and also TNG, the HD version is SO much better than the DVDs.

AIUI you can no longer get TOS on DVD with original effects. If you're unwilling, or unable, to upgrade to blu ray (it is worth it and will play your DVDs as well) then try Music Magpie, CEX or eBay for second hand clamshell editions. The TOS blus are so cheap though it's a shame not to get them.

This is what my brother keeps telling me to do, but I have lots of DVDs so it just seems like a slightly pointless thing to purchase. And I imagine both DVD and BluRay players will become obsolete at some point in the near future.

I'll have a look on eBay, I was just surprised that there don't even seem to be any used region 2 discs on Amazon. Not sure how Amazon marketplace differs from regular Amazon (if at all)? Not familiar with it.

Oh, I didn't realise DVDs will play on a Blu-Ray player. Apologies for my tech ignorance!

Well I'm just glad you've found something out that can help you. I paid less than £100 for my blu player and that's three years ago now so I'm sure you'd get a deal.

I was at Walmart on Thursday, they had the most recent complete TOS series release on Blu-ray, for $44.98. I paid about $60-$70 per season when they were new!

I've seen them for sale in CEX in Norwich. So they're definitely 'out there' if one wants to find them.

Alternatively, the DVDs that came with a magazine and contain three episodes each (which were a Region 2 only deal) contained the non-remastered versions. These can sometimes be found on eBay.

Thanks. Just checked CEX's website - they're selling Season 1 online for £8, and seems to be available in stock in several of their larger shops as well.

You see, the thing is that season 1 of TOS on blu ray is only £12 brand new on Amazon and it seems like a no brainier to upgrade.

You can get the old clamshell releases through Amazon

Season 1
Season 2
Season 3

New are expensive, although second hand seems more reasonable (you'd run the risk of scratched discs). Ironically, it would be two thirds the price to pick up a reasonable Blu-ray Player and buy the Blu-rays.

Those bring back memories. I gave them to my daughter when I upgraded to Blu-ray.

I can't see why the players will become obsolete in the future not while many of us still need the DVDs in our hands and not on a cloud which confuses the hell out of me anyway! While the cash is still there they'll keep on producing!

Well, from what I've heard/read, there's not that big a difference in quality between DVD and Blu-Ray, and I think you need to have a HD TV as well? Plus I'm in the middle of flathunting, so DVDs just seem more convenient all round. Until they invent the holodeck of course.

Not sure how you found these on Amazon. They don't seem to come up on search results at all!

480 lines of resolution vs. 1080 lines of resolution is a pretty big deal.
But if you don't have an HD TV, then you won't see any difference. Blu ray is intended as a high definition format.

Considering they only just stopped making VCRs this year, I think DVD + BD players are going to be around for a good while yet. :)

YYYIIIIPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
By the way you're not the same Tosk who posts on DWO are you mate?

Hate to be picky but It should be 576 vs 1080 not 480 vs 1080. R2 is PAL (for the most part). I think I paid £42 for my blu-ray boxset of TOS.
