Legal situation concerning the new TV series

Have they said there are going to be Andorians in Discovery? It'd fit the time frame sure, but the way you two are talking it sounds like there was a specific announcement to that end.

We know the main character isn't the captain, but I assume the captain will in fact occasionally appear on the show? Or at least be mentioned. Be kind of weird if we never find out who the captain is.

As for which ENT character will appear in the DSC pilot, I bet it's either Archer or T'Pol. (Although if you go by Archer's bio screen in IAMD, he dies 10 years before this show takes place.)

They could always go the Enterprise route and have him appear in a message recorded back before he died.
Do we know how long Denobulans live? Could Phlox still be around?

Never canonically established. The novels have Tropp, a Denobulan, around in 2269 aboard the U.S.S. Endeavour and still around in 2386 aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-E. After all, this is the species which only needs to sleep one day a year or whatever.

Not explicitly established, but Phlox's grandmother was alive when Phlox was a kid, and had also been alive for the last Denobulan-Antaran war which was said to be about 300 years prior to Enterprise. Together that at least means that they would have to live somewhat significantly longer than humans. Especially since Phlox doesn't seem especially elderly in Enterprise; middle age, maybe (whatever that means for Denobulans), but no more than that.

Has anyone connected with Discovery actually said that they're maintaining that tradition?

Although, something else to consider, we don't see an elderly Phlox on the future NX-01 in E-Squared. Although, I guess it's possible he was killed in some accident or something in that timeline.

I haven't seen any indication that they'd break it.
That doesn't automatically mean that they'd do it, though. In fact, since it's been more than a decade since ENT was cancelled and there's an almost entirely new producing team working on the new show, I'd say it's much more likely that they won't bother. An aged ENT castmember would more likely bring cries of "Who's that?" than anything.

But it is still a new Trek show, and the people involved seem to be trying to give a Trek feel.

True, but that "tradition" dates back to one particular era of Trek, overseen by different people more than a decade ago. The new creative team may well do it, but I can't imagine that they'd feel obliged to so just because that's what the previous team did back in the 90s and so.

Nor should they, necessarily. The primary goal here is not to faithfully recreate Berman-era Trek. For better or for worse, that era is over, at least onscreen. Time to start some new traditions.

I don't agree. Memories of ENT are still well within the minds of most Trek fans - if Archer or T'Pol showed up, everyone would know who they are. And the DSC showrunners aren't newbies, either. They're aware of the traditions at play here. I mean, we're not talking about entire episodes' plots or anything like that - just a harmless cameo. No reason to suspect that DSC won't continue this tradition.

As for which one of those characters it'd be? Probably Archer, if only for the fact that Scott Bakula has said he'd love to reprise the role if asked. I'm not sure how eager Jolene Blalock would be to play T'Pol again.

Or any reason to assume they will. At this point, it's an open question.

I mean, they selling it with the tagline: "New crews. New villains. New heroes. New worlds."

Not: "New ship. Old traditions." :)

Just like every other Trek series did when they started. ;)

But rightly or wrongly, ENTERPRISE is largely perceived as a disappointment. So why would you want to kick off your fresh new take on STAR TREK by reminding audiences of that? Seems like that might be sending the wrong message:

"Hey, remember that show that didn't quite catch fire umpteen years ago? Well, we're proudly continuing in that tradition . . ..."

On the other hand, that didn't stop Beyond's makers from referencing a lot about the ENT era. And I've heard that ENT has been gaining new popularity in recent years.

And yes, they're trying to create a new iteration, but so was TNG 29 years ago, and they still had DeForest Kelley do a cameo in the pilot. And that was pre-Berman, since he didn't really come onboard until after the TNG pilot, IIRC.
