Into Darkness

Newbie
I would have to say that this film is the only film in the franchise that I truly dislike. I've NEVER been one to say a movie sucked or was really bad.. but when it got to the part where it openly ripped off TWOK, I had that reaction. I mean.. ripping off a movie in the same franchise.. and not doing a very good job of it. You watch the two sacrifice/death scenes and one completely blows the other one away. And to shoehorn in a resurrection via tribble.. ... okay. I'm at a loss to go any further.

It's aged very badly, as more time passes a lot of people who originally liked it seem to be realising that it was basically rubbish

While others (myself included) find it more compelling upon subsequent viewings. It remains my favourite film of all (and I've seen all official Trek series and movies multiple times, going back to 1973 TOS syndication, in case anyone thinks I'm a "newbie").

I've been watching since 1975, and rank Into Darkness third out of the thirteen movies. :techman:

I understand why some would have a problem with it but I rewatch it from time to time...it's ok.

I was watching Into Darkness today. Great movie.

It's certainly deeper than your average Trek movie.

Definitely deeper than Beyond. Star Trek fans go on about how important morals and message are, but have shit on the one of the deepest movies to ever come from the franchise since it came out. I don't understand?

To be fair, the bar hasn't been all that high (in terms of "depth").

I agree. Into Darkness isn't 2001: A Space Odyssey. But I'm not sure there's a deeper Star Trek movie, and I say that as someone that counts The Motion Picture as their personal favorite.

Into Darkness attempted to be deep and I appreciate what they tried to do, but they dropped the ball. They did a fantastic job of setting up a complex ethical issue that was very relevant given today's political climate and I loved the confrontation between Kirk and Scotty over the torpedoes, but then the movie just got stupid once they reached Qo'noS and Khan took center stage. It honestly feels like the first 1/3 was written by someone else.

I agree it is a flawed film. But there is something about it that is simply engaging, once I start watching it, I can't stop until it is over.

I really disliked Into Darkness when I first saw it, but upon subsequent viewings I don't hate the film. It's a well made film, with lots of good action and some good performances, particularly Cumberbatch and Weller. That being said I can't forgive it for copying Wrath of Khan and I can't accept Cumberbatch as Khan. I also thought the Enterprise crew was too immature. I liked how more mature the crew was in Beyond.

I still rank it pretty low on the list of Trek movies, but more so for the story regression, lack of creativity and not exploring the alternate reality they had created than for the acting or action. The action alone puts it pretty high among Trek films.

Of the reboot films I rank Into Darkness last. Trek '09, Beyond, and Into Darkness.

If I had to pick one as being better than the others, I'd be very hard pressed. Probably 2009, but there's not much to choose between them. They're all action movies.
