Picture the Novelverse - Characters, Ships and More !

Just found out this forum, otherwise I would've posted this sooner. I've reciently finished a mission patch for the USS Pioneer from Rise of the Federation:

I haven't read the books yet (Argentine taxes on importing books have just been lifted, so I hope I'll be able to buy them soon, as I don't like ebooks), but I've read Christopher L. Bennett's annotations on his website so I decided to give credit to both the real USS Pioneer ship and the Pioneer probes.

Previously, and completely unrelated to the ship appearing on the novels, I also made a patch for the Endeavour, using an alternate design:

If you're interested, you can see all the assignment patches I've made for the NX fleet and other works of mine here: http://rekkert.deviantart.com/gallery/45088908/2D-Logos

Yeah, sorry, I got your Facebook message but I was occupied with other matters. And I guess I wasn't confident enough in my aesthetic judgment of assignment-patch design to be sure what to say at first. They're certainly clever. I do like the idea of homaging the Pioneer plaque in the first one. I wonder about the lack of color, though. I would imagine that such patches are designed to be distinctive and recognizable from a distance. But I guess maybe the shape would cover that, since they're usually circular.

Ha, no worries, I imagine that you must be very busy!

Thank you, it means a lot to me that you think they're clever. I always try to infuse my designs with meaning whenever I can.

As for the colors, I actually tried out several alternatives, including having the black lines as red, much more similar to Enterprise's patch, but I decided to keep this colors for two reasons: First, it's different, and second, it's closer to the patch from the real USS Pioneer.

When it comes to being recognizable from a distance, the test I always do is to put the patches over the uniform and see if they have enough contrast and discernible lines to be easily made out on a very small scale, like this.

I agree that most patches are circular, but I also think that alternate shapes are not prohibited per se, just less common. After all, of the few patches we saw on the show, both the one from Enterprise and from Intrepid are based on real life patches (from Columbia and from the USS Intrepid) so I assume that other real life patches, that don't happen to be circular should also be given some love on the 22nd century as well. :D

Cross Cults cover for Christopher's Rise of the Federation #1 - A Choice of Futures.

I really like how the Federation symbol is around the planet. It would be pretty cool if the other novels would do the same with the other Federation founders planets.

Also for some reason this cover reminds me of various cartoon shows I've seen in my childhood.

JD, the refit NX-06 - USS Endeavour (now NCC-06) appears on the cover of Rise of the Federation: Tower of Babel (unless it is the Enterprise - I can't see any hull markings), if that helps?

Heh! Snap, Christopher!

That is a bizarre amalgam of ship bits! I can make out a Danube-class runabout hull, Bussard ramscoop, winglet, and clamp-thingies; Defiant-class nacelle cowlings; Defiant's Type-10 shuttle nacelle cowlings; and, possibly, one of those wedge-shaped Bajoran transports making up the underside?

I'm surprised to see Tev as an Ent style Andorian. I think the US covers used the TOS style Tellerite design.
