Anton Yelchin dead in rollaway car accident

With all due respect to that Man he was in his 70s or later probably of natural causes vs. A horrific accident potential defect w his Jeep

I like the nod of he was promoted to another ship etc. But

Well, I just wanted to point out that recasting major characters was often no problem in other franchises.

No matter how old people are, it is always sad when someone passes away. I see people die quite often, young and old, mostly not of natural causes. Maybe that is why I didn´t see that much of a difference with my example.

The subject line is a little... inaccurate. It was an automotive mishap (possibly he didn't set the parking brake) but not a "crash" in the sense we usually associate with the word.
Early reports all called it a crash, and included none of the specifics we've since learned. I have now amended the subject line to be more accurate.

Anton wasn't killed in an automobile crash. The car rolled and pinned him against a pillar crushing him.
See my remarks above.

It is going to be interesting how the new Anton is written into the series and movies.
He's dead. Neither you nor anyone can write a new Anton.

Your confusion of actor and character does, however, somewhat explain the thread you started.

I've been reading about the Jeep recall on a favorite car site. It's a strange day when Star Trek and Jalopnik come together.

Back in the 1970s, Ford Motor Company had a problem with a lot of their vehicles in which if they were put in Park they could slip into Reverse. Here we are 40 to 45 years later with a somewhat similar problem. Seems like the engineering leaves much to be desired. Scotty's comment comes to mind: "The more they over-think the plumbing, the easier it is to stop-up the drain." I am no fan of all of the electronics and power-assists in newer vehicles. I just hope they fix the problem once and for all so that no one else has to die. I hope they don't come back later with "Well, now we have to fix the fix." That happens much too often.

I've had some time to think about it. I think the idea put forth in the other thread about a potential recast and in this one as well doesn't seem right. In the other thread, someone suggested Jim Kirk walking by a memorial wall with Chekov's name and holoimage on it and laying his hand on it. That would be a moving tribute and a reminder that the new universe is not like the prime universe. Our characters we got to know and love over several years are decidedly mortal. In the prime universe, Ambassador Spock is believed dead. They have memorials for him on New Romulus...

I know the emotions of the cast, crew and AY's family are still very raw at the moment.

I intend to honour his memory by seeing the movie as many times as I feel appropriate.

Yet to see how Paramount will react. They've already pulled out of a few events at Cannes where the cast was to attend.

I don't think anyone in the main cast would be ready to front any cameras at the moment.

I hope with the passing weeks, they will feel the best way to honour Anton's memory is to support the movie.

Any promotional event will have to be low key and sober.

I think the best send off we can all give Anton is to say goodbye to him at the cinema.

I have a 2015 Grand Cherokee. I doubt a firmware update will address the actual problem, which, despite what FCA says, isn't driver confusion. I can actually feel resistance at times when shifting from D>N>R>P, especially from R>P. It will stick in R and the engine can be turned off while in R. If you're nor keenly aware of the problem, you could exit the vehicle while it's in reverse.

If what happened here is this problem, FCA should get ready for a well deserved billion dollar lawsuit. They've been ignoring and handwaving the issue away, and now there's been a death as a result.

Indeed, they should, and not only that, I hope that this leads to people reconsidering buying SUV's like this (i'm sorry, Ar-Pharazon, but that's how I feel.)

So very sad news. Only 27. My dad and I re-watched ST09 yesterday, and could not help noticing how very young he looked in his very first scene. I hope his family can find the strength within to withstand his absence in their midst. RIP dear, sweet Anton.

There are some disturbing coincidences:

This was released on the 19th. In it, Chekov is killed. Bones even says "He's dead, Jim." :

Also, Anton was to play the serial killer in Stephen King's 'Mr Mercedes'. That character rams his car into a crowd, killing a number of people.

The accident in which Stephen King was hit by the driver of a minivan and nearly killed was on June 19, 1999.

I just found out about Yelchin's passing. Very sad news. 2016 has been terrible when it comes to celebrity deaths, but someone as young as Anton Yelchin at age 27 is especially tragic. His portrayal of Chekov made him a household name, but he had a very prolific career in his short life. It's so hard to believe that he was the kid in Hearts in Atlantis, which doesn't seem that long ago to me!
