Was Kes a Good Character?

I hope not..
Her acting was fine. I did love her in Warlord and it always makes me think how much more interesting they could have made Kes.
God that was creepy. Harry would've watched her grow up every day of her life. As the best friend of her parents he'd have been like an uncle to her. I never cared much for Harry but I never really could see him the same way after this.
I've always found it so sad that Kes would remember her daughter after he existence was erased, remember giving birth to her, she'd remember her grandson that she was so close to. That's a loss that was glossed completely over and never explored.
I did write a Tom love poem ... a while back, in fact:Thanks, 2takesfrakes. And to return the compliment, I've recently read that poem of yours about Kes, which was really nice.
If you happen to write a love poem about Tom, I beg you to let me know, LOL!

Many good points here.
I've never seen any hints or statements anywhere during all those years that Jennifer wanted to leave or did have any differences with the producers. If there had been such a case, then it would have been out in the open sooner or later.
There were fans who expressed their opinions of having Kes back as a recurring or permanent character. The reply they got from those in charge was "Fury", a slap in the face from the producers to those fans.
Even after "Fury" when the negative reactions to that episode were clearly showing and fans brought upp suggestions and even stories for a restoration of the character in season 7, those in charge turned a deaf ear to those who wanted the character back.

oh you fickle people. some of you balked at me for having an opinion about an alien mating ritual (it's suppose to be alien, Cat!) but now it's TOO alien when it comes to having sex with their offspring...I thought this was Star Trek? hypocrites. LOL but yes, i stand and support everyone's skin crawling Red Alert of Kim sleeping with an ocampa-hybrid that matures in a matter of months. brrrr....and the man being your best friend be the one to sleep with her. can I say too alien now? pleeeassee.
Well they wouldn't exactly be SLEEPING together, as they're not getting into bed together in order to listen to one another snore, y'know.

It's not too difficult. you could even look for poetry platforms to get a feel of how to start one.
I think we all wanted to write one after watching The Chute. I got a major gay vibe watching that. And that's before i knew what gay was. I thought it was an original concept hahaha. I was a kid... okay....
I have often wondered why The Chute was the only Tom and Harry centered episode (unless you count Demon). Did something about this episode scare somebody?
I doubt "The Chute" scared anybody into not doing another Tom and Harry centered episode. It's just that Season 3 was the beginning of the Tom and B'Elanna relationship and his screentime became more geared toward that relationship. Tom and Harry had plenty of scenes together, like in Captain Proton material, Demon, etc. But the romantic relationship became the larger focus of the character. Combine that with Tom becoming the new nurse in season 4 and the shows transition from Ensemble to Janeway-Seven-Doctor oriented, both Tom and Harry had far less to do and fewer episodes to be prominent in.
Thanks for the encouraging words (to both of you) but I know my limits. A lot of people on these fora also write fan fiction - I can't even do that. I have absolutely zero ideas what to do with our heroes. Seriously, if I were locked up in a room on condition I could only leave it if I wrote a piece of (fan) fiction, I would have to spend the rest of my life among those four walls. It's just not something I have talent for.
Writing poetry is even more difficult - or so I imagine. I've never done anything like it. As a child we had writing poems as part of our homework - I was suffering and ultimately came up with something for fear of getting a bad mark. But when I was made to read it out in front of the class, I was embarrassed. And even students who were generally much worse at studying than I was were able to write something that at least vaguely resembled poetry .
So no, I'm afraid I just can't do it. It's simply not my cup of tea.
As you know, I'm much better at expressing myself in pictures ... That I find easy. Some DEADLOCK wallpapers are in the making right now ... Two Janeways with a pink background and a green Vidiian in the middle ... How does that sound?

She was an interesting character whose potential was largely unexplored. She had an interesting perspective; her powers could have been interesting, if carefully limited and defined (and growing slowly over the seasons); and it doesn't hurt that she was attractive.
While Seven was an awesome character, I do wish they'd kept Kes.
It seems like Chakotay would have been the most interested in leaving, and that would have also shaken things up in a small way for other characters. Tuvok as XO; Paris and Kim perhaps getting promoted to fill the gaps (ok, maybe not Kim); B'lanna becoming the unofficial leader and voice of the Maquis.

I would've liked to have seen Kes and Seven interact, I think there could've been some good scenes between the two. Because they were both ''innocent'' in their own different ways whereas Kes seemed more the type to willingly hug someone, Seven always seemed a bit ''stand-offish'' at least at first. So I would've liked to have seen how those two got on. Alas, we'll never know now.
As for Chakotay being the one to leave instead, yeah that could've been interesting. Not sure I'm that keen on B'elanna being the ''token Maquis senior officer'' (not that they ever really gave any of the other Maquis Officers a chance to shine which is one of the more disappointing aspects of Voyager for me as I would've liked a bit more of a mix of the two crews, ah well LOL) as Chakotay said early on to Janeway, but it would've been interesting to see her in that role.

The idea of a sentient who lives an entire life in 9 years is intriguing. I think the character would have worked better in a single episode or a short story arc. Having her as part of the main cast only served to expose the weaknesses in the idea.
