Quoted from this link: http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/karl-urban-almost-didnt-return-as-dr-mccoy-for-star-trek-beyond-304 I already loved Karl Urban, but this is simply amazing.
I never get why TMP get's so much negativity, if you want your movies more action packed then go and watch a Transformers movie. Also, I don't think the interior of the Enterprise has ever looked so good. These comments just cement my view that Urban is the very best thing in the new Star Trek.
So many good points you just made. I hear people complaining about how Star Trek movies aren't Star Trek enough, whatever the hell that means, but when asked what their most favorite Star Trek movie is, most fans will say either TWOK or First Contact, the most action packed of all the older Star Trek movies.... I loved TMP, because it really feels like Star Trek.
I always imagine how great it must have been for a fan of the show back in the 60s to go and see TMP for the first time. These days it seems to be a regular occurrence for successful TV shows to migrate to the silver screen but back then it wasn't, yet alone a TV show that was cancelled. It does bug me it's remembered as a failure too. A budget of $46 million and a box office of $139 million (according to Wikipedia)? Compare that to, to choose a film at random, the 2010 Predators movie which had a budget of £40 million dollars and a box office of $127 million and yet Predators is considered, if not a massive success, quite favourably.
TMP only drags from when Enterprise first enters the V'ger cloud, until the energy probe first arrives. Everything else is as Urban describes it to be. There are a lot of interesting character motivations, a lot of personal growth and self-realisation that's all due to the arrival of a living machine. TMP's effects still hold up. They get the story told. I think it's very pretty, as far as motion pictures go and Robert Fletcher was just an amazing costume designer. He even contributed towards many alien designs in the movie - including the revamped Klingons. TMP has so much care that went into it, and it's still there. You can see the attention to detail ... it's got a lot on offer.
And to think that Urban will be part of the MCU aswell. LOTR, Dredd, Star Trek, Marvel (wasn't he in Xena aswell?). This guy has done some of the biggest fandoms. Good actor, sounds like an ok dude, and I'm not ashamed to admit he's a good looking man. Must be good to be him.
The Wrath of Khan having some action sequences doesn't make it any less Star Trek than any other film.
"if you want your movies more action packed then go and watch a Transformers movie" It's not that black and white.
Never said it isn't Star Trek. I said it's one of the most action-packed. The Undiscovered Country has its fair share of kaboom, but I consider it to have more of a classic Star Trek vibe then TWOK does.
Star Trek is great because it can be different things to different people and they're all equally valid.
"If you want your movies more action packed then go and watch the very next Star Trek movie" is really rather stating the obvious though, isn't it? Especially for most of us. When I referred to TMP being remembered poorly I meant in general, anyway, so I'm not sure why the need to leap to the defence of a movie that wasn't even referred to by me.
I've always liked TMP. I thought it had a very interesting story. My only problem with it is the length of time they take entering V'Ger. It drags a bit. Other than that, I think it's great.
I, for one, enjoy the V'Ger cloud stuff for the pure visual artistry. Cinema is a visual medium, after all. Kor
There's one thing that's for sure. The Motion Picture is easily the most beautiful film in the franchise.
