Do they have beer and pizza in the future?

I'm not sure it ever was. As far as I know, he just said he was from Iowa.

I'm guessing that, even today, not everybody from Iowa grew up on a farm. Let alone in the 23rd century. :)

(Picard on the other hand . . . .)
In the movie, Gillian calls him "farmboy," and he never actually corrects her, but that might just as well have been "bigger things" being on his mind at the time as much as it might've been the actual truth. That said, I'd always taken it literally at face value until Trek '09 finally confirmed it once and for all.

Well, caloqually, "farm boy" is used to describe anyone from the the plains states. He does have to actually come from a farm.

Kirk drank plenty and while on duty in the original STAR TREK. Bones and him would often have heart-to-hearts about command over a drink. In fact, on those occasions, it was often Bones who brought the booze with him.

Except for that one time that he came into sickbay and demanded "Give me the brandy!"

I can see that.

I think it's because of my impression of Jeffrey Hunter as a western movie star. I'm not sure if the scene with the horse in Mojave was influenced by that at all.

And I just did a bit of reading on Memory Beta, and it looks like TrekLit writers have given Pike a background along those lines, involving ranches, horse breeding, and whatnot.

Yep. In particular, BURNING DREAMS by Margaret Bonanno gets into that a lot.

Des Moines isn't exactly a bustling metropolis. In fact, in most places--like when driving down the random street--it just feels like a small town with a couple of tall buildings in the background.

I distinctly remember Tom Paris trying to convince Neelix to have a pizza night. But given his obsession with 1900s Americana, I doubt it was commonplace in their society. If it was it would have been alot easier to convince Neelix. ☺

Here's a crazy idea. Maybe pizza and beer were forgotten by the 23rd century, but Gillian reintroduced them when she traveled forward into the future, thereby creating a timeline in which pizza and beer were once again commonplace by the 24th century?

Kirk didn't just reintroduce whales to the future. He brought back pizza nights!

I see no reason why beer would be forgotten while Scotch, Brandy, Wine, and other forms of alcohol survive. Beer is and has been extraordinarily popular, and dates back over 5000 years. I don't see that being forgotten in the next few hundred. If for no other reason, I'm sure Starfleet would probably teach at least some officers how to brew for survival reasons.

As for pizza, my guess is that it survives in its basic form -- a bread baked with some form of cheese and other topping. As for the specific recipes that will be en vogue 300 years from now, I have no idea. But somehow I find it difficult to believe that the greasy salty nastiness that we have in restaurants today will survive in a more enlightened era.

It must have been truth serum. One sip and both Kirk and Gillian promptly spat their respective secrets.

:guffaw:

It's so true... lmao.
