For some reason I like to think of Pike as more of a "ranch" kind of guy, rather than a "farm" type of guy.
I can see that.

Gillian must be seriously regretting her decision to jump on board the Bird of Prey.
"No beer or pizza you say? Jim, where is that Guardian of Forever you were telling me about?"
This.It was Michelob. 'Nuff said.
In the movie, Gillian calls him "farmboy," and he never actually corrects her, but that might just as well have been "bigger things" being on his mind at the time as much as it might've been the actual truth. That said, I'd always taken it literally at face value until Trek '09 finally confirmed it once and for all.I'm not sure it ever was. As far as I know, he just said he was from Iowa.
I'm guessing that, even today, not everybody from Iowa grew up on a farm. Let alone in the 23rd century.
(Picard on the other hand . . . .)
Kirk drank plenty and while on duty in the original STAR TREK. Bones and him would often have heart-to-hearts about command over a drink. In fact, on those occasions, it was often Bones who brought the booze with him.
Except for that one time that he came into sickbay and demanded "Give me the brandy!"
I can see that.
I think it's because of my impression of Jeffrey Hunter as a western movie star. I'm not sure if the scene with the horse in the Mojave desert was influenced by that at all.
And I just did a bit of reading on Memory Beta, and it looks like TrekLit writers have given Pike a background along those lines, involving ranches, horse breeding, and whatnot.

What is the percentage of Iowans living in cities versus farms? I
Easier to find out now, although there might be more rural residents in the 23d century. Now or in the future?![]()
It must have been truth serum. One sip and both Kirk and Gillian promptly spat their respective secrets.
Uhura orders a Budweiser in Star Trek '09, and while it's an alternate universe, I'm sure Bud exists in the Prime universe too.
I see no reason why beer would be forgotten (...)
As for pizza, my guess is that it survives
Maybe pizza and beer were forgotten by the 23rd century, but Gillian reintroduced them when she traveled forward into the future
As for pizza, my guess is that it survives in its basic form -- a bread baked with some form of cheese and other topping. As for the specific recipes that will be en vogue 300 years from now, I have no idea.
