The Lack of "News" About Trek 2017

Anyone else think the reason we've had so little (read: next to no) news on Trek 2017 is because of the CBS/Paramount legal accord concerning the division of the franchise? IE, CBS isn't really allowed to do anything short of say "we hired people, we picked a studio to film at" until after July - after "Beyond" has been released? Certainly with them apparently to begin filming in September (I think?) August is going to see a virtual Niagara falls of information flowing our way. I imagine a mid-august press release about plot, setting, format, episode numbers and casting blowing up the nerd-web...

Honestly surprised they've kept so much under wraps thus far. Even the rumors are minimal!

Almost certainly not, since CBS owns Star Trek in its entirety and can do whatever they want with it. They only gave Paramount a license to produce Trek films. Paramount has absolutely nothing to do with the new Trek TV series.

Now with that said, I think CBS is just waiting for Star Trek Beyond to come out before deciding when to give out information about the new show. Not wanting to steal Beyond's thunder, so to speak.

What news? They didn't come up with an idea, full story, write 13 scripts THEN announce the show. They announced the show, hired people, put concepts down, threw ideas around and hired more people to do the same.

They've likely got a concept and stuff by now, pre production in full swing - but this isn't an overnight deal. There's dozens of things to do/ We'll have news when there's something to say.

I think we'll get a lot of news about the new series in August, maybe even our first actual look at some stuff not long afterward.

The only agreement between Paramount and CBS is that CBS will present the new show 6 months after Beyond. I don't think there is a blockage of news. I think news will begin to flow once the casting is on the way. That could be any day now, I think they will do the casting somewhere in June/July with casting calls going out in a few weeks. Fact is that the show will begin filming only in September, so we have at least 1-2 months before new will begin the flow in a regular basis. I'm pretty sure.

I'm almost certain that they will have some big announcement on the 8th of September as a respect payed for the 50th anniversary of the show, as the 8th of September will be exactly 50 years since the first episode aired.

What news? It's still very early in the development cycle for the show. Networks are still announcing pilot pickups for shows that will air in the fall. Star Trek isn't debuting until January. If Star Trek was a random sci fi show on network TV you'd have heard about a pilot, but would likely only now find out if the show would be ordered to series. So Star Trek is ahead of the game. There will be news in the fall once production starts, but until then the writers are working on what story they want to tell, and until that happens there is no news to even report on.

That's a myth, I think.

I wouldn't expect much more than the news we've had about a show still more than 6 months away. We know who is making it, where they're making it, when it airs and what format it will appear in. While I'm sure there are creative works being done as we speak, I doubt much is finalised. Some of the team are only in month two.

I think it means the show was cancelled, 9/11 was a cover-up, jet fuel can't melt steel beams and we're all doomed to Hell.

Well, shit, that pisses me off being retired and all. I was hoping for something better than Hell.

It's possible the announcement of a new Star Trek show is a group hallucination we're all experiencing right now.

I had a dream a week ago that the new series came out - and it was the Voyager crew on a Prometheus class ship post-NEMESIS. I thought I had a better imagination than that, it was incredibly dull.

I think filming is set for September, according to sources.

The teaser means Fuller has his vision ready, they know what they want to do. We're talking about one of America's most successful showrunners. And he has Nicholas bleedin Meyer on the team! I don't think they have all the writers, but judging by the Twitter account some people from Fuller's otehr shows are onboard.

Have they begun casting? I doubt it, it's only May.

My guess is since San Diego Comic Con will be slap bang in the middle of hype for BEYOND, Vegas in early August, literally a fortnight later, is where Fuller and co will want to make a huge fuss about the series. Before then we may have a new title and/or casting announcements/leaks of character descriptions for casting agents.

And yes surely 8th Sep will be a key date?

It feels like ages away, there's so much I want ot know RIGHT NOW lol but really we are talking a few months that will go by quick!

I think CBS is really trying to distance themselves from Paramount. It is very weird the lack of news about beyond, and all the issues they seem to be having. There is likely major issues with the film, and CBS is just wanting to break free. They have been sidelined due to the bad robot exclusivity deal, and just want all the good or bad press from the movie to pass, and then make the big announcement about the new series. Clean break from the JJverse, and go back to prime timeline, which is the one they own.
