Yeah, and though I didn't read that recent Secret Wars event, it sounded more like Marvel's version of CoIE, bringing all their alternate worlds into conflict and then collapsing them all into a single patchwork continuity.
As far as I know, Rebirth is just a "rebranded" continuation of the "New 52" that follows on from the "Convergence" and "Future's End" story events, which makes it more similar to what Marvel did with "Ultimatum" and its Ultimate Universe than a "Crisis" event where you destroy the universe and then rebuild/reboot it.
What DigificWriter said. Rebirth has been widely assumed to be a continuity reboot, but from the news I've read, it sounds like it's really more just a readjustment within the current continuity, a shuffling and relaunching of titles like the previous DC You initiative. There will be changes in costumes and character statuses and team compositions and the like, but changes that happen within the narrative. The only significant parallel-worlds thing that I've seen confirmed is that
the pre-Flashpoint Superman -- who was brought into the New 52 universe in the Convergence event a while back and has been operating secretly ever since -- is somehow going to be replacing the New 52 Superman, who's had his identity revealed and is apparently dying.
Regarding the Rebirth though, it seems as if a number of pre-Flashpoint characters will be returning.
I'm actually thinking that the two Supermen will merge somehow. I hope DC doesn't throw out everything they've done with Superman up to this point--I've enjoyed the last year's worth of Superman titles and the de-powered story line.
Yes, but apparently they'll be existing within the current "New 52" continuity. The universe as a whole is not being replaced again. Either those old characters have crossed universes after the Convergence event, or there will be equivalents of them showing up within the current reality.

The real Superman is coming back??? Really?? That is awesome.... I am so out of date with comics.... what issues or books is this happening in (back and operating secretly, in particular)....
Is there ANY word of doing anything with the classic grown Wally West? That was my biggest hope for Convergence....
I don't think we'll get the "old" Wally back but who knows. The Lois and Clark series out now is pretty awesome and you don't need to have read Convergence to get into it. I'm thinking that Clark will reclaim his secret identity by being seen with Superman based on how things are going. I'm also very excited to see the return of Ted Kord who was my favorite Beetle, after John and George of course.

Yeah, that was hilarious.. they were about to blame Thor, too.... the Batman vs Superman spoof was great too.
Sorry, I should have used different terminology, but for me, the post crisis Superman is the one who has existed my entire life (outside of Superfriends rerun as a 6 year old and the Donner movies) and will always be the "real" Superman to me - he is very similar to the DCAU version, as well, which cemented that take on the character in my mind. I hate the Nu 52 version's costume and personality, so this is absolutely fantastic news to me. "MY" comics run (which I began in the early 90s) backtracks to crisis, and ends at Flashpoint. To me Superboy is the punk in the leather coat, Hal Jordan is an older guy with graying temples, and Wally West is *THE* Flash.
That's interesting because what I consider to be my era was the two decades before COIE. The era when Neal Adams defined Batman and Curt Swan drew Superman. The age of Jim Aparo and Dick Dillin. I especially loved the Justice League comics from the mid seventies up until the destruction of the satellite. When the real Superboy existed. I had every issue of Action Comics and Superman from the mid seventies to the mid eighties and fifteen years worth of the Justice League. I also had entire runs of the Legion (Superboy and... as well as their solo title) from 1976 to 1986, the New Teen Titans, and Batman and the Outsiders.
That is rather ironic.... your collection ends where mine starts
At least post crisis, they made an attempt at folding variations of those stories into the history of the universe, and at least acknowledges that those stories happened in some form.
I did buy comics for a year just before Zero Hour (the death of Superman era) and then started reading again about ten years ago--so I'm not a total dinosaur.

Knightfall got me into things, and I back tracked from there. Zero Hour was my heyday, where at one point, after getting all the 0 issues, I was collecting practically the entire DCU until it became cost prohibited. I trimmed it down to all the Batbooks, Superman books, JL, Flash and GL by the end. Eventually I ran out of money, and was back down to just the Batbooks, where it started lol.
Wally is the one, true Flash for me. (Heck, I even prefer Jay Garrick to Barry Allen.) Kyle Rayner is my Green Lantern (frankly, he was the first time I ever cared about Green Lantern), and as much as I like Oliver Queen I love Conner Hawke a whole lot more.
