I'm alright with that. I miss the "water cooler" effect weekly shows have for discussion. It's just not the same discussing Daredevil or something similar when everyone is watching at different speeds.

After watching the new episode of Game of Thrones live on Sunday, reading all the fan reactions, and now anxiously waiting for the next episode with everyone else, I agree wholeheartedly.

It's always fun to speculate about and anticipate each episode with others. When you release all 13 episodes at once, there's no real room for discussion, as everyone's wary of spoilers, everyone's going at different speeds with some at one episode and others on another episode, and when you end up finishing it, there's no real buzz surrounding it as there would be with a classic season finale.

This is true. Binge-watching is great except when those water cooler discussions come into play.

I'm very okay with this. I can't remember the last time I actually had to wait to watch something. I dare say there will be an increase in forum activity during the waiting periods!

What about after episodes premiere... will they remain available for repeat viewing and if so, what's to stop someone from waiting until all season episodes are up then subscribe, binge-watch, unsubscribe.

Not that I would do that, but I am wondering how CBSAA will deal with this potential cheating of system.

The only option I can see is for them to remove episodes after some duration of availability, but that wouldn't be fair to the honest subscribers.

Am I missing an obvious solution here?

Nothing, except the fact that most Trekkies won't be able to wait three months after the premiere to start watching.

They're not going to implement a timed episode availability, that would be ridiculous.

Stupid. They embraced the future with online programming but keep the old network weekly model. What are they going to do next, have a mid-season finale and ensure that subscribers have to keep the service for 9 months?

I understand why they're doing it but it's still a bad move. They should have just made a deal with Netflix and fully embraced the future.

Embracing the future doesn't have to mean "Lets give Netflix some more subscribers and line THEIR pockets!"

The same things were said about another service (a service that didn't have a flagship show like CBS will) and they're doing quite well for themselves with a smaller market potential than Star Trek and other CBS properties will have.

Netflix and similar places have led the charge and advanced the TV medium. CBS (and others) are catching up. That is embracing the future no matter how much anyone grumbles about a subscription fee.

Why would you have to keep the service for all nine months? Just unsubscribe when they are showing new episodes.

I'm glad to see new Trek, and that they seem to be trying to make a quality show, but I honestly think the only reason they're doing this is an attempt to get more people to subscribe to CBS All Access. They appear to be wanting to turn CBSAA into another Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu and to do that they need a something that will draw people to their service, and since Trek is probably their most popular franchise, it was the logical choice.
I'm actually glad they're going with weekly releases. I don't really binge watch so if I do watch the new series as it's released, weekly releases will give me a much better chance of keeping up.

Indeed. That is embracing the future, because the future is looking like it's gonna be a bunch of different streaming services rather than one big thing.

I wonder what they have planned for those of us outside of North America.

Although I'm not sure about CBS, I know the HBO streaming service not only had a region block, but also required a cable subscription in the US.

I guess I wouldn't be too surprised to see it on Stan, considering they're the service that carries the majority of the series over here (Australia).

One solution could be: CBS allowing access to archived videos only for those who have subscribed for 3 months (or more) at a stretch. So this way people can't jump-in, binge-watch and jump-out. Of course, the trade-off is that existing subscribers will have to wait 3 months to watch re-runs.

Netflix managed to retain subscribers after whole shows were available to download. It's about not resting on your laurels and coming up with new things to keep your subscribers hooked. Plus don't underestimate the benefit of inertia to subscription based services, people just can't be bothered with subscribing and unsubscribing all the time, or don't get round to it.

I'm sure they will just ignore the "issue". Most fans won't want to wait 3 months to watch the show. They'll subscribe when it comes out and pay for 3-4 months until the season ends. Sure some fans will wait and binge watch once the show is done, but not enough to justify pissing off other subscribers. Honestly, I suspect the weekly debut has more to do with international markets that may air weekly and less to do with a desire by CBS to force people to pay for multiple months.
