You know, all this mess might restore fan films to what I always thought they were supposed to be: a labor of love produced by fans who wanted to use their own time and money to make a homage to their favorite Sci-Fi franchise.
Couldn't think of a good second line for this meme, but I still think it's apropos.

I'll bet the C/P lawyers didn't think it would help their Copyright Infringement case against Axanar (and Alec Peters) if Mr. Kraft, who did composite work for 'Prelude to Axanar', was allowed to crowdfund and produce another Star Trek related fan film, while the Axanar case is still in litigation - so Mr. Kraft gets a 'friendly' C&D via Facebook; and wisely complies.
I'll step out here for a moment and say I don't see anything intrinsically wrong with using crowd-funding/internet for raising funding via fans for fan-films. STC seemed to be using it ok, and producing interesting stuff.
But of course idiots like AP had to fuck it up

I agree with you. I think crowdfunding was something fan films were always going to try, but they seriously downplayed the risk involved legally speaking. And it also sort of ruins the point of a fan film, in my eye. I want to see stuff like Horizon, made on a shoestring by enthusiasts with talent, not a multi million dollar movie. I've got Paramount for that.
Your father is lying. The concept that the ongoing inter-European conflicts of the first half of the twentieth century constituted in essence an ongoing civil war is both a published academic idea, and nothing to do with the EU - it is to do with the inbred nature of European monarchy and government, and the often homogeneous culture between warring nations. It is a fringe view and neither pro- or anti- EU in nature.
Now that it's increasingly appearing that Alec's misadventures have poisoned the fanfilm pool, I very much want to see him become a persona non grata. Not just in the fanfilm community, but in the Star Trek fandom. This man, and his greed, are starting to ruin things for more people, outside of the hapless folks that got suckered in the early stages of Axanar. I don't want to see this dimestore Samuel Bronston hurt anyone else.

You know, talk of Peters 'moving on' is what is getting me worried. Even if he loses BIG, what's to stop him filing again for bankruptcy and creating some other company (in whatever field of business) in the future? You hear about that happening all the time.

He still appears to have enough fans and supporters to maintain some sort of Sci-fi career for quite some time. A fact I think he's very much aware of, hence his apparent optimism and positivity in the face of the growing online backlash. Which, in turn, gives those fans and supporters even more confidence in him and his endeavours, whatever they end up being.
I read where Terry said they could delay payment on something and cancel other, the rent had to be paid so they would be using donor funds to pay the rent.

If I had to make a guess, I would say that Parmount and CBS were willing to let in-progress films be completed and released, following the lawsuit, but are now telling any new ones starting up to refrain. I think that's more than fair, and shows a willingness to work with the filmmakers.
Another side possibility: could it be that they simply want to stop new fan-films during this limbo period while the lawsuit is taking place, as they look at how best to deal with people like Axanar? And perhaps their policy towards fan-films will be solidified AFTER that matter is settled?
I can't imagine them stating NO FAN MADE PRODUCTIONS OF ANY KIND ANYWHERE. If I had to make another guess, i'd say it's more about scope at this point: length, quality, money spent. They just might not want productions that rival an actual production, or even come close. Keep it under 20 minutes, with homemade sets and a low budget, and you're fine. Just a thought.
