Pot, meet Kettle.

Speaking truth to power. While an entertaining film, I'm tired of TWOK being held up as the Gold Standard of STAR TREK films.

It goes in cycles. For most of 1996-2009 First Contact was the gold standard. On most scale modeling forums TMP is the gold standard. To read most forums this week The Undiscovered Country is the gold standard. For a long time before that with non hard core fans the gold standard was "The One With the Whales"

What about it doesn't make much sense?

Why didn't Khan beam Kirk aboard when he snagged the Genesis device?

Why doesn't the Reliant command crew know how to read star charts?

For starters...

For one thing, the Enterprise doesn't go to warp until after Carol's distress call. So it's still in the Sol system. So how are they the closest ship to Regula?

Not only that but Kirk actually says they're "the only ship in the quadrant." I had always assumed that meant they were on a mission in Beta Quadrant or something, which still wouldn't make a TON of sense, but would work.

1. The Enterprise (at Earth) is the closest ship to Regula.
2. The Enterprise (crewed by cadets, trainees, and instructors) is the best choice for the mission.
3. The senior staff of the Enterprise was re-assigned en mass to be instructors.
4. The Reliant's sensors seem to be totally useless.
5. The crew of this ship don't notice there's a missing planet.
6. Yada yada Khan knows Chekov.

And that's just the beginning.

I didn't say the "plot theme" didn't make any sense. Just that the movie in it's entirety didn't.

Those things I mentioned - while common Trek tropes - don't make any sense.

Then again, genetic superhuman who does insane when his wife dies and blames Kirk for blowing up another planet causing an entire planet to drastically change ecosystems in a matter of a decade doesn't make much sense either.

Oh, the irony.

We'll have to agree to disagree I guess. I don't see those as plot themes.

Actions only happen because they have to happen for the movie to go forward. I don't care how long Kirk was behind a desk, he should've raised his shields at the first sign of trouble. Without Kirk making that totally brain dead move, there is no movie. But the scenes built around it are entertaining. Same with Khan not beaming Kirk aboard. We get Khan's cool "buried alive" speech, but his actions make no sense but have to happen or else there is no Mutara Nebula battle.
