16 years to go until...

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
...poor old Lieutenant John Kelly is swallowed up by a graviton ellipse (it's basically a giant space lemon) during the Ares IV mission.

If we assume he's in his mid to late 30's in 2032, then he's about 20 right now and might even be a member of this very forum. If so, hello John *waves* sorry about your horrible death in the giant space lemon.

When I was looking up the relevant dates, I tried to find some info on the first human on Mars but all I could find was the Ares missions (doesn't mention who was the first person on Mars) and Utopia Planetia in 2069 before colonies were established in 2103.

But who was the first person to step on the surface of Mars?

And what profound thing might they have said? I want your examples.

I think it would be nice to dedicate such a moment to the work of all those upon which the achievement was built, so in that spirit -

"If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants." -Isaac Newton

And of course, the alternative is...

"Rover.... ROVER! Where are you, boy?"

I have absolutely no idea who this character is.
The poor guy from Voyager's One Small Step who got pulled into a subspace anomaly and was lost for 300 years until Voyager found the same anomaly and his space capsule. We got to see him try unsuccessfully to escape through old log entries.

They beamed his body aboard the Delta Flyer and rather stupidly gave him a funeral on the bridge. I don't see why you'd want to commandeer your command center for something like that. Just their luck some alien could start shooting at them while there's a big coffin right in the way as everyone scrambles to the stations they aren't watching.

Yeah, and if the Sanctuary Districts really happen by 2025 it probably means Trump won the election.

Now we know how the sanctuary districts happened. Trump established them for American citizens who were Muslims, then he decided since they were there, why not throw homeless people in there too?

I felt sorry for the guy. the idea of being stuck in that place starving/suffocating to death. yikes.

It was not a nice way to go. I liked how much it affected Seven though. That episode really humanised her although I hated how they made Chakotay suddenly become a Mars expert. That should have been Tom.

First words on Mars?

We claim this planet in the name of the Donald.

Oh yes, John Kelly! Every time I see this episode I'm so moved, because the feeling, that humanity has gotten that far - and it's not even a long time until then - is wonderful. I even realized that the NASA's Mars project and MarsOne (which is independent) are both planning to go to Mars between 2027 and 2035, so Voyager seems to be right!
I'm such a space geek since I began watching ST and I'm happy about any new mission to space and all the insights humanity earned from that. I'm just not able to understand how people can say that all that "not interesting" or "unnecessary" or even "impossible". I really think - even if my brain is full of future space stuff - that we will be able to fly at warp sooner than we think. Maybe not in the 2060s, but when I'm still alive. At least I hope so.

Then again, the first interplanetary crewed spacecraft were being retired in the 1990s already. If they never went to Mars, where did they go? Jupiter, Venus, Mercury? (The beginning of the 21st century would mark the "first successful Earth-Saturn probe", so if those ships did go there, they never came back.)

And we did see those spacecraft, at least in scale model form, in the 1996 of VOY "Future's End"...

Do you think Trump (I almost typed Drump LOL) would take advantage of the Ferengi and be their overlord of profit?

I watched a documentary about Trump the other day that highlighted the fact that he was born into privelege and that he's actually shit at business and failed with every one of his companies (but the companies were too big to fail so he never really got punished). Ferengi would not be impressed.

I wonder why Trek has never mentioned a fictional first human on Mars? They're usually not shy about writing future human history.

That explains why he asked Sara Palin speak of his integrity in Iowa. omg, it was so painful to watch. Even Trump had a look of regret.

good question. Not enough Mars on ST!

So we have 16 years until Star Trek is officially an alternate universe? With the exception of the Eugenics Wars of course...

Less.

This mission was the Ares IV which suggests Ares I, Ares II, and Ares III.

This is what i mean about Trek being quite vague about when we first went to Mars and who was officially the first person to step foot on it. Ares IV was not the first mission. Memory Alpha is also pretty vague. It's hinted that people first go to Mars around 2030 so only 14 years to go.

I think it will be better than even odds that the first words spoken after landing will be, "I hereby claim this world in the name of Elon Musk and all of his corporate entities". :techman:
