Moffat Out, Chris Chibnall in

I'm pretty sure no one was wishing for Chiball! Not qutie as bad as Gatiss but almost.

So one episode between now and March next year. Thank Zod for Big Finish.

ARGH. Apparently we posted at the same time. Razzum frazzum.

Gotta say, I'm really disappointed that we won't get a series in 2016. The article makes it sound like this was a BBC1 decision, though, not Moffat's. And I'll bet BBC America is beyond angry at BBC1 over this.

And to be honest, I'm glad Moffat is turning the show over to someone else. Seasons 8 and 9 really were not for me. Plus, death means nothing to major characters under Moffat's tenure. On the other hand, he gave us my second favorite Doctor of all time - Matt Smith - and I loved Seasons 5 and 6 and the 50th anniversary special.

Chibnall is a good choice to take over, I think. He's quite familiar with Doctor Who. The Power of Three is one of my favorite episodes, and Broadchurch has been a great show. Torchwood's first two seasons seem to have been an aberration for all involved.

I very much disagree with your assessment of the Silurian episodes and The Power of Three. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship was something of a hodgepodge of ideas that needed a couple more rewrites, though.

Just out of curiosity, are we all thinking that Capaldi will go with Moffat? Olivia Colman for 13?

I can't see Capaldi staying on into 2018 so it's even more likely he'll be leaving with series 10. Which sucks. Plus the fact we only get a Christmas special this year which are rarely spectacular is also annoying. it was bad enough with the Tennant specials.

My incoherent thoughts at the moment.

First, revealing this when they did, this stinks of a Friday news dump.

Second, I've felt for a long time that, unless the BBC decided to go outside of their comfort zone for a Bryan Fuller or an Ira Steven Behr (both of whom, frankly, would kick serious ass as a Doctor Who creative producer), it would be Chibnall. He not only is the safest hands, he's also the most experienced at television production of the names that fandom has usually mooted (like Gatiss or Toby Whithouse).

Third, a single Christmas special in 2016 isn't at all surprising. A full series in 2016 wasn't in the cards because it would have needed to start filming right about now. A Christmas special and a spring run lets Moffat and his team start filming in June or July (like Series 5), after Sherlock finishes filming, for an April broadcast date.

Fourth, despite airing first, I suspect the Christmas special will be filmed in an autumn block. There's no reason to film it any earlier than that. I'd almost expect to meet the new companion in the Christmas special, then.

Fourth-and-a-half, I also wouldn't expect us to find out who the new companion is until June.

Fifth, I'm leaning toward the assumption that Moffat and Capaldi will leave at the same time, so Chibnall will start his tenure much life Moffat did, with a blank slate.

Sixth, I'm fairly certain people in BBC America are peeved right now.

Seventh, with Chibnall as the next producer, I wonder if Ben Daniels might get a second chance at the Doctor.

Eighth, I have no opinion about what kind of show Chibnall's Who will be. I don't expect it to be risky. You don't hire Chibnall if you want risky. What he is is a safe, competent pair of hands. He's not a bad choice. At worst, he'll be a caretaker producer.

Given the noise Capaldi has made about not expecting the shooting schedule to be so arduous, I cannot imagine he's going to stay on for Chibnall's tenure.

I was hoping for Phil Ford. I guess my hopes of Clyde and Rani becoming the Doctor's new companions will go unfulfilled.

As for the lack of content in 2016, we will be seeing the Coal Hill School spinoff Class in the fall, for what it's worth. Although I gather that show's connections to the larger DW mythos will be minimal.

First thoughts - much pishness.

A year with nothing, at least Big Finish is doing David Tennant now.

This is fairly lukewarm news. On the one hand, good riddance to Moffat, but a full year before HIS last year? Why can't they jump the ship with the new producer already? Also, why couldn't they manage to have done a few specials to fill the space - I mean, at least RTD's gap year HAD some DW in it. Its insane, to me, that there'd be a complete lack of DW from TV, bar one Christmas episode... it makes no sense at all.

Presumably Moffat already has story plans laid out for the next season. And Chibnall probably has his own obligations for the year ahead.

Well, it's better than the rate Sherlock comes out. The recent Christmas special was the only installment of that series between 2014 and 2017.

You never seen "42" or "The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood", "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" or "The Power of Three"?

Basically, if you want a mediocre episode that's neither very good, nor very bad than Chibbers is your man.

I'm not overly happy about this, although in fairness I've been rewatching series 5 and the Silurian 2parter was a lot better than I remembered it being, and I liked the power of three and dinios on a spaceship, on the other hand 42 is dull and this is the man responsible for the train wreck that is Torchwood s1!

I think Allyn is right, he's a safe pair of hands, but that does worry me. Whatever your thoughts on RTD or Moffat you can't deny both made a distinctive show, Who was rarely bland under either of them and I'd hate it if it became AN Other TV show.I'd have almost preferred Gatiss because I imagine his Who would at least have a unique tone.

But well done Moffat haters he's finally going, be careful what you wish for...
