Robert Meyer Burnett is certifiably insane.

I mean... does he really think this is going to do anything but hurt him or his career?

"Hey TRUE FANS: Jar Jar (Ha! I just made that up!) Abrams ruined Trek, and now Star Wars! Your only hope is to back an independent and professional sci-film, and that is Axanar!"

I really liked his Trek TNG blu-ray special features (and he even sold me a Hot Toys 12 inch Jor-El figure on ebay, and he confirmed it was him on twitter years later), but this makes me sad. At least at first, then I laugh at all the fun people are having here with the "cult of Axanar".

And yes, I'll be out a donation to Axanar, but after so much time passing and the goal posts not only being moved, but switched from football to "Calvin-Ball" , I kissed my money goodbye, knowing that it may have put a few gallons of gas in Alec Peter's gastank...

I'm out $160 for this shit show. Was really excited to see the finished product too...

These guys are just a fucking joke. I donated to both of the 'feature' fundraisers....so I'm not likely to see ANY of the 'perks'. Kind of wish I had some of the Prelude perks as 'collectible' relics/conversation pieces.

I feel ya, man. Maybe, we can email them and ask them to send us a patch and the prelude blu-ray in lieu of rewards that will never materialize for a movie that will never materialize either. Unless all their remaining stock is seized and burned by CBS!

I am really sorry ozzfloyd that sucks, but on the bright side-you did see the light and realize where to place the blame. I really can't believe people are STILL sending them money. It's just sad all around for the doners. The ones who are still giving are going to be really mad IF they ever open their eyes.

Axanar is going to get slapped with tons of lawsuits once donors realizes what they have done.

CBS is not going to let this slide by. the team messed up three times.

let me show you what they did.

Axanar team spent 100K on Ares Studios (studio they wanted to make and create, set up)
250K on items (unknown items presumed to be electronics)
10K on home base (their place was Upgraded from shitty place to neat place similar to those of an lounge room in office building)

probably some couple of things we don't even know about.

It's just unfortunate that, in the end, the donors might pay the price for this little shindig.
Donors aren't paying for anything.

Donors made a donation - well-informed or not - and that concluded their transaction.

That's it. It sucks that some people apparently are confused by the concept of donations and feel like they're "buying" something or "investing" in something, but hopefully these negative examples will make even the most naive donors reconsider what donating actually means.

Doesn't make it any less unfortunate -- and probably won't change a damn thing in the future other than giving them someone to complain about on Facebook.

I am constantly amazed at how disconnected some people get from reality when dealing with anything that takes place on the internet. Most normal people will think twice before buying a car at Joe Smarmy's used car lot that just opened up two days ago -- or at least understand that they might be taking a risk. Many of those very same people won't do even the slightest bit of due diligence before buying (or "donating") something online (and this extends far beyond crowdfunding), and will be absolutely shocked when they get scammed.

The internet is magic to these people, and that extends to everything on it. I don't see it changing any time soon.

Yet... Although everyone uses the words 'donation' the first line of the TOS is that if you are legally obligated to provide what has been paid for...

I found a quote of Alec Peters (GarthofIzar) on reddit saying "And yes, anyone who actually donated, can get a refund by asking." I doubt Peters will honor his word however you never know unless you ask.

With so much of this stuff having gone around, I think it might be exhibit ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha by now.

Thanks for posting those screen captures, Maurice. The line you highlighted says it all. I reread Peters' Annual 2015 report. Peters sank all of the first kickstarter money and Backerkit sales money into Ares Studios after doing Prelude. Of course the IGG money is going into Ares Studios too.
Alec Peters said:
Ares Studios - We funded and created a film studio. While yet not finished, Ares Studios will have everything needed to make movies for years to come.

Infrastructure - We built the infrastructure that will allow us to make great Star Trek and great fiction films for years to come. Our fundraising operation is now one of the most sophisticated to come out of crowd-sourcing.
It really pisses me off Peters took advantage of Trek fans to finance his new "professional" production studio company instead making the "fan film" he originally promised. I hope CBS/Paramount devours that $16 million Peters brags about he made from selling Marketworks.

Heck, not even saying it's a bad thing; it's fun to see "big budget" fan stuff made, but I don't like the threat it poses. The more money that goes into it, the more it has to make the IP owner consider going nuclear on all fan films.

Has there been a big-budget fan thing made yet that was worth it? The first Sky Conway film at best had some charm but I couldn't sit through Renegades. The first Starship Exeter was better than either of them. Is there even anything else?

It seems like the best approach is with a fan franchise is to start cheap, be productive, and scale up because amateur and ambitious writing and directing will inevitably lead to fanwank, which money will exacerbate.
