CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Since I'm thinking of crowfunding, in general. It might make sense, as this has been abused to many times, if the crowdfunding companies had some sort of requirement or you pay back "X"% of the funds to donors if you fail. Something like setting a deadline for a certain launch or production start point or you have to reimburse 50% (for an example) of donated funds. Might curtail some of these campaigns that make big promises then just vanish when the money pays out.

I think it's like any purchase, do you research before investing. There are never any guarantees and you can always end up with a lemon.

In the very unlikely event that they dramatize all this Axanar/CBS feud for a TV movie or something, maybe they can get John Cusack to cameo as David Gerrold again.

We could always crowdfund our own movie about this. I mean, I don't know anything about producing movies, but why the heck should that stop me?

Hasn't stopped others.

Of course, I don't want to have to deal with actors or renting a soundstage. So I'm thinking we do this with Claymation.

Well, you're already showing more Producer-sense than some wanna-be filmmakers I could name... ;)

Actually, I remember Burnett saying awhile back on the podcast he was using action figures to help him storyboard the Vulcan scene. Which immediately made me think of this:

And the market is wide open and ripe for profit.

He did. He's quite proud of it, also.

Some of it can be viewed in the IndieGoGo pitch video. Someone shared it on the IStandWithCBS page today, but it's easily found on google too.

See, this is where I think stuff starts getting mean-spirited. I've used action figures and a camera to plan shots. It's just one more tool in planning.

Oh, no meanness intended. I just really liked "Spaceballs."

Where does that leave the donors? My guess is there won't be much left for them. Remember, Axanar (or maybe Peters individually, I don't know) will still be on the hook for the Ares Studios lease. That plus other legal expenses related to any settlement will probably destroy whatever assets Axanar as a corporation has remaining. Obviously I don't know anything about Peters' personal assets.

Alec said he had a three year lease and paid the first year and security deposit up front.

I don't think he'll be getting that security deposit back.

I just don't get where they thought it was a good idea to commit a fledgling project to a $432,000 debt right from the start?

Donors aren't banks. They generally don't ask to see audited financial statements or a professional business plan before handing over money to something they think sounds really cool.

Colonel Sandurz:
No Sir! I didn't see you playing with your dolls again!

Couldn't resist. Great scene. All kidding aside though, using action figures to design scenes is a great idea.

Hubris? Not thinking ahead? Figuring the goose would lay golden eggs forever?

Your choice; I'm just spitballin' here.

I actually asked Alec about the lease sometime back and he got all pissy, but one of the things he alluded to was the indiggogo didn't cover rent for year two and that they would need another fundraiser... I suspect that's what the planned ares studio kickstarter was for....

Obviously I don't know anything about Peters' personal assets.

According to Alec's girlfriend, he has really small assets

You know...okay, I get that this is a dig directed at Peters, but all the same I'd like to leave Ms. Kingsbury out. We know nothing about her other than her job at Axanar Productions and the apparent fact that she's Alec's partner, nor do we know that she's ever been paid a penny for her work ("salary deferred until 2016"). None of this mess appears to be her fault.

Agreed.

I'm contemplating my Indiegogo for a new documentary chronicling the rise and fall of Axanar.

ANNOUNCING:

When the Music's Over: Alec's Folly

My goal is to raise 1 million dollars for this feature length picture. I figure some $6000 is needed to cover my cellphone bill... errr phone expenses for my new studio... errr. A $23000 auto expense for a new ca.... camera. Maybe some additional unforeseen expenses.

I also intend to go into business with Hansa Coffee for some new premium coffee blends that can be purchased to help fund this major undertaking. Big House Bold is a premium French blend we will offer, other flavors include Cease & Decaf, and Copyright Colombia.
