The top 25 SF TV shows of all time list

Last week I offered up my long-standing, updated list of best SF movies of the 2010s (and all-time) for the end of 2015. Now my equally long-standing and highly updated list of the top 25 SF TV shows of all time. This list has gone for years in some cases without any additions at all, but we are really in a golden age of SF TV now. It has more changes this year than ever, and of course space opera is in it!

Best 25 live-action SF TV shows or mini-series of all time(no pure fantasy!):

1. The Expanse(2015)-Normally I don't add shows to the list this quickly, but having read the novel, I feel the show is headed in the right direction in all aspects of production.

2. The Man in the High Castle(2015-)- Again, this one is only one season through(renewed already for a second), and I already love the tone and similarity to the novel. Much sooner than I usually add a show to this list.

3. STNG(1987-1994)- Still the best combination of all the elements that make ST great. It maintained the much of the topicality of TOS while adding more sophisticated drama and technical superiority.

4. TOS(1966-1969)- This show is a classic because of stories that can be watched repeatedly with the viewer coming away with something each time. The best paced, most adventurous ST show of all. Re-mastered edition helps this show keep pace with other SF that has followed the original, and made it even better!

5. Twilight Zone(1959-1964)- ST's greatest competition as a show with deeper meaning, though it was not strictly SF. The acting is terrific, atmosphere eerie, and stories top notch. Serling is one of the greatest teleplay writers that ever lived, and the dialogue is dense and satisfying for multiple viewings even decades later.

6. Outer Limits(1964-1965)- The purest SF show in history. Explored scientific extrapolation in a very mature way for it's time and medium, and it always showed the advancement as it related to humanity. Actually more mature in it's scientific view than the new OL despite having a "monster" appear in each teaser.

7. Black Mirror(2011-)Black Mirror is a British television anthology series that features speculative fiction with dark and sometimes satirical themes that examine modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. A third season will be aired in 2016.

8. Sense8-(2015-)The plot revolves around eight strangers from different parts of the world who suddenly become mentally and emotionally linked. The show aims to explore subjects that its writers feel have historically not been emphasized in most science fiction shows to date, such as politics, identity, sexuality, gender and religion.

9. STDS9(1993-1999)- The black sheep of the ST family, but also the most complex dramatically and politically. Only scatter shot comedies, a mediocre 2nd season, and a somewhat disappointing final season keep this one from ranking higher. Best seasons: 4-6...as good a 3 year span as ANY show.

10. Masters of Science Fiction(2007)-This could have been the greatest anthology ever. Six episodes started off with stories by Heinlein, Ellison, and Sheckley! I place it at number 10, but only because I have to grade it incomplete. What a shame.

11. Lost(2004-2010)-While not as spellbinding as early seasons, this maddening show became even more SF themed in later seasons. Disappointing ending to the series though.

12. Fringe(2008-2013)- Enjoyed this immensely as it became more detailed in its own mythos. Humorous, scary, and clever.

13. Person of Interest(2008-2016)-Not outwardly an obvious SF show, this one postulates some near future computer tech with questions of ethics morality, and transparency and it touches on the singularity.

14. Arrow(2012-)-The best TV based superhero show yet(except for season 1 of Heroes).

15. Daredevil(2014-)- Set the pattern for other streaming shows to follow of it's genre. Terrific characters and stories.

16. Jessica Jones(2015-)- Violent and dark, but engrossing.

17. Childhood's End(2015) Relatively faithful for a TV adaptation, this mini-series visualizes Arthur C. Clarke's vision in definitive fashion.

18. Doctor Who(2005-)- A fun romp (often a little too silly) punctuated with some dark moments that continues the best traditions of the original series and melds it with 21st century sensibilities.

19. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy(1981)- While not nearly as good as the book, this still has enough satirical laughs for a dozen regular TV shows. Everyone should see this at least once.

20. Twilight Zone(1985-1989))- This show lacked the same consistent human commentary of the first, but contained so many excellent episodes I have to rank it here. Won numerous industry and genre creative awards.

21. New Outer Limits(1995-2002)- More paranoiac cautionary tales than the first show, but also great acting, clever episodes about contemporary scientific advances, and episodes with a lot of emotional impact. The 2nd best SF show that began life in the 90s.

22. Heroes(2006-2010)-Engrossing first season and I probably would have ranked it ahead of Lost at that point. What followed was decent but you could simply have season 1 and it would rank highly.

23. Babylon 5(1994-1998)- Instant mythology and good intentions but imperfect execution. Still one of the better attempts at space opera ever.

24. Battlestar Galactica (2003-2009)-Mainly on the strength of its first 1 1/2 seasons and its contribution to the genre on TV the last few years. I wish it would have been an adventure show with drama rather than a nihilistic soap opera with incidental SF themes. Blood and Chrome is closer to how I'd have made the show.

25. H+(2011-?) Before Sense8, Daredevil, etc was the web-series H+. A rare series that tackled the implications of the accelerating information technologies. Unconventional, non-linear and..unfinished, supposedly a 2nd series is being made. I'm leaving it at number 25 till I find out if that's so.

Dude no way, Firefly and Daredevil are better than Expanse. The Expanse is too young and has way too many flaws to put it at number one. I don't even care for many of the main cast's characters. Now I admit the final ep 4 was excellent but at ep 2 I wasn't sure what to make of this series. At ep 1 of Firefly and ep 1 of Daredevil you already knew these were great shows. Into the Badlands is another worth viewing for its MaxMax and KungFu vibe, its pretty kickass and the show Mr.Robot is also worth look at, really good but I don't think you can class it as scifi or fantasy its kind of like a thriller/drama and close to reality

any current Dr Who should always be given respect for its longevity and staying power

IMO its ridiculous to rank the Expanse as number 1, absolutely ridiculous

Man I'd love access to your stash - the expanse???

The books are OK throwaway genre fiction with no real new ideas and the series is a fairly competent run of the mill to series but best sci-fi show of all time - surely you are trolling us?

Babylon 5 is my number one. LOST, number two. If only those two shows hadn't had horrendous final seasons they would be perfection.

Dude, there's only four episodes of the Expanse so far

Glad to see THE TWILIGHT ZONE on the list. I was watching part of the Syfy marathon last night and was marveling at how compelling the show remained, even after sixty-some years.

Haven't checked out THE EXPANSE yet, but, yeah, it does seem a bit premature to declare it best SF show "of all time" after only four episodes!

The top of my list would be some configuration of Twilight Zone and Star Treks TNG and DS9, followed by some configuration of Lost, Battlestar Galactica and TOS.

I've been meaning to check out The Expanse, The Man In High Castle and enjoyed the first episode of Sense8.

Heroes I feel would have been a great show if it only ran one season. After that it kind of got to this weird directionless muck of no character having the same agenda for more than two consecutive episodes.

Wait, Farscape isn't even on the list?

I noticed that, too.

But I liked that the list included both new and old shows. Most such lists swing too far one way or the other, featuring only established classics OR the latest hot new things.

Deep Space 9
Star Trek TNG
Battlestar Galactica (reboot)
Daredevil
Firefly
The X- Files
Star Trek TOS
Stargate SG1
Enterprise
Stargate Universe
The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Babylon 5
Jessica Jones
Voyager
Stargate Atlantis
Battlestar Galactica (original)
Doctor Who
Heroes
Lost
Agents of Shield

I'm struggling now. I can't think of any more that I actually like...

I'm not sure if I can even get to 25 shows, but the ones I liked in order:

1) Farscape - I still think this was the best acted, best written show I've ever seen. Claudia and Ben were like lightning in a bottle in terms of chemistry and the rest of the cast also gelled really well.

2) Star Trek TNG - The Trek I grew up with and the Trek with the best cast

3) Star Trek DS9 - Probably the best written Trek in the franchise. TNG and DS9 represented an era I will never forget when I was growing up. It was an awesome time to be a young (teenage) fan.

4) Babylon 5 - This was an arc based show done right. Each episode had a beginning, middle, and end, but the big picture kept developing and developing that when things are paid off, they were really paid off.

5) Firefly - I've only seen this show once, but it's themes, style and concept were so unique and the characters were so well developed I wish I could have seen where it could have gone.

6) The X-Files - I just saw this series last year and loved it. The series is sold on it's chemistry of Anderson and Dachovney, but there were many well written episodes.

7) Sliders (The first few seasons) - I have to have a covet here because I loved this show before the Cromags showed up. I thought it was unique, interesting, and there was an episode were the crew land in San Francisco under Russian control and it was just really interesting to explore these alternate universes

8) Battlestar Galactica (2003) - I'm not huge on this show like a lot of people are. Still, it was well written and the first season and a half were some of the best stuff I've seen on TV.

9) Quantum Leap - Pretty much the same as Sliders, but I was too young at the time to really appreciate it.

10) Orphan Black - Yeah we've only had 3 seasons, and there are some seasons better than others, but this show did one thing no other show has done. Introduced an actress who I've really come to respect and think she's the best actress working in TV today. What Tatiana Maslany is doing on this show feels like it's not a big deal and it should be. She's changing the way I look at acting. To play all those characters and give them a unique personality is just masterful.

11) Jessica Jones - I liked this better than Daredevil. I like the lead actress and this series focused on the consequences rather than glorifying the act

12) Star Trek - I respect this series and I've been watching some episodes lately. It started a 50 year old franchise and despite this Axanar news, I'd like to think the Fanbase is still going strong

13) Doctor Who (2005) - I'm starting to lose interest, but the first few seasons were great and this last Christmas Special reminded me of a time when I looked forward to the series.

14) Star Trek Enterprise - I'm starting to gain more appreciation for it over my rewatches. It's really not a bad series.

15) Star Trek Voyager - I will always enjoy this series, no matter how many flaws it had. This was really the first Trek series I watched as a teen/adult.

Ok, so I couldn't get to 25. 15 is a nice number. ;)

Any list of "best TV sci-fi" that doesn't have The Twilight Zone as #1 isn't worth taking seriously.

Not only is it the best Sci-fi TV series of all time, but it's probably the best TV series of all time.

Not only is it the best Sci-fi TV series of all time, but it's probably the best TV series of all time.

I have no doubt it's great, I've just never seen an episode.

I'm not sure if I can even get to 25 shows, but the ones I liked in order:
really the first Trek series I watched as a teen/adult.

Ok, so I couldn't get to 25. 15 is a nice number. ;)

You might be able to get to 25 if you considered stuff made before 1987.

Just saying. :)

I'm only 31, and I did include Star Trek. :)

that's not a real excuse, you can download and buy DVDs whenever. Some of the best scifi comes before our time

Planet of the Apes should have also made the lists

They made and Apes TV show?

Yes. I'm not sure where you are, but it's being shown the UK on True Drama (Sky or freesat, not virgin though) from Monday at 5pm.

I seem to remember seeing an episode or so back in the 70s. Apparently, Mark Lenard was in it too.
