Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Like a spare tire.
Indeed.

Slow and easy to track. Not good if you are trying to run away from Imperial starships.
Very much so.

And excellent further background coverage there, Ithekro. I see we read much of the same material. :)

When it came to the Tantive IV being tracked by the Devastator, I'd heard two stories on that.

1. Yes, it was the expert tracking abilities of the scanner crews aboard the Devastator that allowed them to track Leia's ship through hyperspace. (The outer rim is likely more sparsely populated than the core worlds and spiral arm worlds, so Tatooine was probably a good bet when they tracked Tantive IV's trajectory.)

2. In the radio play of Star Wars: A New Hope, Captain Antilles of the Tantive IV surmised that someone aboard ship was a traitor, and installed a homing device aboard the blockade runner, allowing the Devastator to track them to Tatooine. "We can't trust anyone now!" Antilles concludes.

I still think when dealing with SW (a fantasy) you got to exstinguish looking atthings from acience point of view. They are spaceships. They go form system to system. That's just what they do. Backup hyperdrives or not, it's important not to get hung up on it.

But, just for kicks.. a new photo just dropped.

Supposedly the multiple ray shields in the Theed Generator rooms were to prevent radiation and/or heat from getting to other places in the palace. That it cycled seems to be a feature, so perhaps it was used to allow some heat by from time to time/ This would make it part of the palace's central heating system, which means Darth Maul fell down the main air conditioning duct.

The problem with the secondary hyperdrive is that there's literally no time to activate it. The Falcon was trying to escape the Imperial blockcade, they try to fix the ship in the "cave" on the asteroid then they attach themselves to the Avenger. Once on the Avenger Han checks the ship's log to figure out where they are and they're already in Bespin's system. And Avenger didn't go into lightspeed until they dumped their garbage including the Falcon. And with Boba Fett tracking the Falcon though normal space it was easy for the Empire to reach Bespin first. There was no tracking of the Falcon needed. IN ANH the Falcon had a tracker placed on it, Vader comfirmed that to Tarkin.

No, it doesn't mean they are in Bespin's system. You are think too much about actual distances and our inability here to travel between them.

No.. imagine they are in a car. Anoat (where they are when they are clamped to the star destroyer) is in upstate New york. Hoth is located in Pennsylvania and Bespin in in Florida.

Considering that georgraphy, I could drive to Anoat from Hoth and I could even drive to Bespin.. but that trip would be a bit mire exhausting and it would take a while. If I had a plane ticket (hyperdrive) then the trip to Bespine would take two hours, but I wouldn't need that plane ticket to get Anoat from Hoth.

Star Wars ships go between systems like we can use a car to between towns.. because Star Wars is a fantasy.

I don't see why Bespin and Hoth can't have the same star. The line from General Veers about the Rebel's deflector shield protecting an area of the sixth planet of the Hoth system doesn't preclude that.

Yes but with Star Trek, they clearly want to lean more toward sci fi in that (at least for a time) it mattered how they travelled between stars.. and the distances were important to the storytelling. Star Wars rarely cared.. the hyperdrive was more about making a quick escape or getting somewhere faster than just getting somewhere.

Ther ninth planet actaully and before detaching from the Avenger they in Anout system not the Hoth system.

If they could travel between systems as you suggest why go to Bespin at all? Why not just meet up with the Rebel fleet?

It's not ninth, it's sixth. And it's Anoat. If you insist that hyperdrive is necessary to travel between stars, then the Anoat system would share the same star, too.

and they're already in Bespin's system.

They are??

Upon checking the Falcon's log they check what system they're in and Han mentions Lando and tells Leia that Bespin is far away but they can make it. To me anyway that would mean they're already in Bespin's system.

I don't think so--if they are already in the Bespin system then how did they get their without hyperdrive. The entire space battle must have taken place within the Hoth system. Flying Spaghetti Monster has the right idea, I think.

That's what I've been saying there's no way they could without a hyperdrive and clearly based on the dialogue in the movie they couldn't. LEia even complains "No hyperdrive?".
