Today's pet peeve: YouTube's new design

I realize that there's not a whole lot to this thread.. it's a pet peeve, nothing more.

But I will say that I don't like Youtube's new transparent controls. I mean, for them, it's pretty cool, that they made the functions on the videos, as well as the progress bar, transparent and it only appears when you mouse over it, but.. but...

Every find yourself at a buddy's house and you and that person start sharing cool YouTube videos you've seen, and there's always that video that video that your buddy plays that you find boring, unfunny, or just lame. In such a situation, the only relief is to stare at the progress bar, and to know that the video will eventually end. Well, thanks to companies overthinking everything, that can't happen any more.

Dumb rant is over.

It seemed jumpy. I have always thought Mysterio would be cool, he would fit in a HS story. I can see Kraven though.

ETA: I thought it was jarring at first but they seem to go back in forth with the format on YT with videos just like Twitter with how things display. Ugh.

Reading that rant, all I could think was "I wish there was a progress bar for this rant".

I wish there was a like button for this.

I don't like the fact that YT always starts playing another video after the existing one ends. I wish it would just play the video you want and that's it.

You can click something so it won't do that. :bolian: I have to do it because I clear my browser every time I log off.

That would require cookies, wouldn't it? For all but a few sites (like TrekBBS ;) ) I have my browser set to reject cookies.

It's one of the reasons I like Firefox so much: it lets me do this on a site-by-site basis. No way am I letting Google set a cookie!

I hate that in the past with a long YT video I could start downloading it, pause it, go take a piss or get a coffee and come back and it was a long way into downloading. Now, as soon as you hit pause the actual downloading stops too.

WTF?!?!

Oh and in the past, if you wanted to watch that same video again, it was already loaded. Now it loads again - bullshit!

The one thing I hate that Youtube recently started doing was dropping videos to low-res (150p), where in the past you could go to your settings and select the video quality that Youtube would always play. Now I always end up having to select the video quality to at least 450p.

Why are so many of their recommendations stuff that I have absolutely no interest in?

Google can pretty much read my mind when it comes to doing a normal search, but YouTube can be really clueless when making recommendations. I thought they did that based on past viewing choices?

YouTube's recommendation system is bonkers.

"Say, you just watched a video discussing sexism and misogyny. Would you now like to watch one of these 15 videos in which women are called liars and whores?"

That was always the case for me, standard seems to be 480p no matter if 720p or even 1080p versions are availabe, it will rarely play the HD version from the get go even though i have a 50Mbit stable line.

Apparently YT measures your internet speed and then sets video quality, i can't find an option to permanently set quality to highest possible or at least 720p if available.

What also bugs me is that you can't permanently disable comments, you have to do it manually and some videos really go overboard with embedded comments.

Other than that i really don't care about the redesign as long as it's functional which it is.

My only complaint is that the Watch Later button is sort of hidden now. Other than that, it's a fine redesign. I mainly use Chromecast when using YouTube so it's really just a way to make a playlist.

OP point proved!

How come some videos won't start playing even when the buffer bar is almost complete?

On a tangent, I don't like the new TrekToday design. Scrolling is really juddery now.
