Plane registered to Horner crashed today...

Where did you hear of confirmation? The article on the CBS site you linked doesn't have an update yet. Still, I hope it's not true.

The guy who does art for La La Land Records confirmed it:

Read it on agent Richard Kraft's FB page as it was relayed from Belinda Broughton who knows Horner's assistant.

That film composer Bruce Broughton's wife.

Reported to be the only person in the plane.

Composer Jeremy soule is confirming it, too at his Facebook page by linking to what Horner's personal assistant posted today:

A great tragedy has struck my family today, and I will not be around for a while. I would like some privacy and time to heal. We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart, and unbelievable talent. He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road. Love Sylvia.

Horner brought me a lot of joy over the years. He also brought me a lot of frustration, frustration born of the knowledge that he was very talented and very, very good at what he did.

He wrote some magnificent scores -- The Rocketeer (my favorite of his work), The Land Before Time (an underappreciated gem, imho), Apollo 13, Braveheart, and yes, two Star Trek films. I know I'm leaving out a lot, and that's only because he left a massive body of work behind.

I always hoped he'd get the opportunity to score another Star Trek film.

Like I said, he has brought me a lot of joy over the years. He was a talent.

^You said it. I'm listening to the Apollo 13 soundtrack as I type this. James Horner was an amazing composer, song-writer and human being, whose contributions to Star Trek, as well as the rest of the entertainment industry, will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Mr. Horner. My condolences to James' family, friends and co-workers.

Listening to the soundtrack from "Bicentennial Man" as I type. "Land Before Time" is next...

I think he is "writing" one more now...The Soundtrack of his Life...I hope some day we all can "hear" it.

No official statement has been made yet. The Hollywood Reporter got their information, like everyone else, from the assistant's facebook post. Until something else comes out corroborating this, I am holding out hope.

Damn. I was hoping the reports were wrong. I love his body of work, with Apollo 13 and Casper being my favorite soundtracks. May he rest in peace. :(

Much Green Food to you, Our Friend. One was happy to be of service. And what a "service" you gave us!

Only 61 years old, too. And over thirty years ago had to follow in the footsteps of giants like Alexander Courage, Sol Kaplan, Fred Steiner, Jerry Fielding, Gerald Fried, and Jerry Goldsmith. And he did and then some. There probably hasn't been a popular movie released in the last 35 years that didn't have a score composed by him. He will be missed.
