Violent Protests in Baltimore

Is the violence by Baltimore Protestors Justified?

But not doing what you think the cops want you to do, i.e., tearing stuff up in your own neighborhood, might garner more sympathy.
What if, once in the neighborhoods, the protesters simply sat down and refused to move? No violent motions. Just sitting there, silent as the dead?

They would route traffic around them and the news media would get bored and leave.

Then the police would likely start rounding people up as gently as possible.

Food Stamp abuse and fraud comprise such a small minority of program users that it's just another red herring used by cultural conservatives to create scapegoats and draw attention away from far more endemic and systematic abuse of federal funds by people with real power and influence. Most Food Stamp cheats and abusers are caught and properly punished for breaking the rules and the law.

Buying shrimp cocktail or an expensive pizza with Food Stamps should never be a violation of those rules and laws.

+1

^ So the goal is just ratings rather than social justice?

For the TV networks? Yes. For those affected? It is to get attention for their plight. Unless property is getting torn up, most Americans simply don't care enough to push for change.

Property has value, obviously more value than black lives.

Generally violent protests are not planned in advance, they are excited or incited by some external force or factor. Critically analyzing a violent protest using questions like What Were They Thinking? or How Did They Think People Would React? is rather pointless.

Meh, since I pay taxes for the maintenance of interstate highways I get approval on what kind of vehicle Tiger Devil Dog uses to drive on them - it's in my interest to minimize wear and tear on the roads, after all.

Tongue firmly in cheek, of course. ;)

I'm more than happy to have a conversation about other abuses of federal funds, but to deny that entitlement spending isn't a problem is just being obtuse. And continued reliance of welfare and other entitlements only exacerbates the problems that the poor in this country face.

Problem is, the only practical solutions to "ending welfare" also involve government programs and a lot of federal and state spending to train welfare recipients to get and hold better-paying jobs and careers. If all federal welfare programs were ended tomorrow what would be your solution to replace them?

Just about everything most people come up with also involves taxpayer dollars being used to help the poor and the working class climb the ladder. And no, private charities and organizations aren't big nor well-funded and expansive enough to help that many people so they're not a viable option as "the" replacement.

It's good to hear you are against police abuse and brutality! :techman:
Of course I'm against police brutality and abuse. I just don't see how burning down your neighborhood is going to fix that.

It won't. But it sure got your attention, didn't it?

Yeah, and not in a good way.

Now instead of talking about the police brutality everyone's talking about the innocent people who were attacked and the businesses that were destroyed.Good luck fixing that economic problem now that the tax base is even lower and no one in their right minds will want to move into the area for probably the next ten to twenty years.

But hey, you sure showed THEM.

Granted. And black-on-black murders are a huge tragedy.

On the other hand, who's responsible for most wasted and stolen federal tax dollars that get pissed away in crooked contracts or sent to foreign governments with horrible track records when it comes to basic human rights?

The guy or single mother on Food Stamps? Because if so, wow - those folks have a lot of power that somebody should tell them about!

I'm for ending all aid to foreign governments. I'm also for disbanding the active duty army and air force and having a strong and robust National Guard to fight our countries wars. And an even stronger Navy and Marine Corps to defend our political and economic interests around the world, the constitution actually call for just that. This would keep us away from unnecessary military entanglements like Iraq and Afghanistan unless it is absolutely necessary.

Who is responsible for 90% of the black who are murdered each year?

But that isn't what's being discussed here. We've taken an entire race of people, cordoned them off in poor sections no one wants to invest in and turned them into social pariahs. Then you allow the authorities to treat them less humanely than animals.

Then you have the gall to try to blame them for a cycle of violence that we've locked them into. There's no jobs, no respect and very little in the way of financial help offered to them beyond food stamps. But fuck them, its their fault.

Sounds like the government's fault to me.

Exactly, it's the government's fault. But by all means, let's continue to give then our money since they've obviously proven that they are more than capable of solving the problem.

Incredible how many arguments you can fail at simultaneously. :guffaw:
