New Top Gear

^ too right.. Which isn't a surprise given the reports about him over the years being a bully and a serial discussing womanizer.. I am so surprised that Hammond and May stuck by her through all this bullshit

Because, however clever or entertaining he was/is, at heart, he's a giant, hateful, asshat, and will always be a giant, hateful, asshat. Asshats don't consider other people in their decision-making, because, to them, other people don't matter. Really shouldn't surprise anyone that he continues to behave the same way. He's a DICK, and everyone knows it.

I am somewhat disappointed that May and Hammond have left, but equally disppointed that they left to support Clarkson, yet none seem to have shown any support for the poor guy on the receving end of Clarksons verbal and physical assult.

You've just described quite a lot of people on British television. Ironically, some are actually considered national treasures, like Stephen Fry, despite being the same kind of pompous, nationalist, hate-filled asshat which he demonstrates on nearly every episode of QI I've seen. But hey, at least he's gay, smart, and witty, so that makes it all okay I guess.

Brits are so weird.

Stephen Fry is a pompous, hate filled nationalist in nearly every episode of QI?

I know people take different things from a show but that's quite the impressive interpretation.

I may have used a little hyperbole by claiming nearly ever episode, though I did point out that it was nearly every episode I had seen, but yes, he does. He's particularly spiteful towards the United States, even on the rare occasion when he gets his facts right about it. There's been a number of times how he snidely bemoans how dumb and fat all Americans allegedly are, but he has no problem mocking Mexico, Wales, or other countries, too. He also arrogantly loses his shit over any little thing.

And the pompousness is just blatantly obvious. I don't know how anyone doesn't notice that.

It's particularly baffling when he then goes and tries to pretend that he doesn't hate the same things he regularly bemoans on the show. But hey, gay, smart, and witty. So ha-ha, it's just comedy.

Hmm I don't quite see it. He certainly likes and dislikes things (as most of us do) but he generally articulates those likes and dislikes very intelligently and amusingly such as that clip you linked. You saw an angry rant, I saw an amusing if reactionary dislike of any form of anti-intellectualism (which he regularly aims at Davies anyway). Plus he has often gushed about America on numerous occasions (and even made a series about visiting each state).

And I'm not sure why you keep mentioning his being gay as some kind of basis for not being allowed to criticise him. If he was straight, you wouldn't say....."But hey, "straight", smart, and witty. So ha-ha, it's just comedy".....would you?

He is often a little narcissistic and over sensitive but that's part of his make up. In general I would rather see more Fry's on TV than Clarkson's (though funnily enough, Clarkson has always been at his most likeable when he's appeared on QI)

I've watched rather a lot of QI and I have never seen Stephen Fry as "hate-filled,"--rather quite the opposite. He's rather anti-religion, which is his right (and I am, too, so I agree with him). He's pointed out things about American culture that baffle him, which I find interesting. But he's also been very complimentary about America. He's a rationalist, a free-thinker; I find that to be admirable.

*shrug*

To each his own, I guess.

Stephen Fry hates America so much that he spent five months driving Across the country from state to state, doing a TV series and book about his travels, and then when he got home decided to do the whole thing over for his personal life because he had so much fun.

They need to think of Clarkson's departure as an opportunity to rethink the show.

I'm not suggesting going back to a serious-style magazine program like it was before 2001. But maybe, just maybe, they could incorporate something like that into the more light-hearted fun stuff. But do it in a jazzy modern style. No reason it couldn't work.

Whatever they do, it needs to be different. :)

It could surprise me, but I can't imagine why a new format would appeal to someone like me, who doesn't drive and isn't interested in cars.

I just enjoyed the three presenters dicking around, comfortably filling a niche somewhere between Jackass and Last Of The Summer Wine...

Hammond, Clarkson and May was reunited recently according to the tabloids. I have only glanced a picture of them on the front cover of a newspaper but didn't have the time to read it. Have they reunited for a new show?:wtf:

Probably their live stage show which they had sold tickets for before Clarkson was fired.

Only reading about May's departure today. BBC news forget to mention it despite reporting that Wilman quit.

They were photographed in London while meeting up, they're friends, it happens.

I'm a massive petrolhead myself - it ranks alongside my love for Star Trek in my life, and I've been a huge fan of Top Gear down the years, and to be honest I'm glad this has happened to the show, bar the odd good episode it had descended into a load of staged, scripted, unfunny tripe on a par with Last of the Summer Wine. The recent ambulance episode was pretty much the last straw for me - utterly dreadful television without a single car on it. I know it's supposed to be an entertainment show, but it's meant to be about motoring, not 100% dicking about.

I think the turning point was when Hammond had his accident, that was when he seemed to think 'OK I'm a celebrity now' and his dress sense and general demeanour went down the plughole. The only one of the three that's come out of this well is James May who seems to have remained true to himself seemingly.

I'm not saying the show can't be fun or interesting, but compare the simple episode from years ago when Jeremy drove the Audi A8 from London to Edinburgh and back on a tank (when Audi said it could only do the trip one way) which was a totally engrossing piece of TV to that utterly insulting ambulance episode and you can see where the show has dropped in quality and content.

Even the road trips have gotten tedious - same staged format, and they always do the same stupid things to the cars, what they seem to overlook is that the show has excellent production values and when the three of them aren't being dicks they are damn good presenters - let the stunning locations and the cars speak for themselves - when the show does that it is superb, interesting, entertaining television.

I for one look forward to it returning to the BBC with a new team quite frankly. Clarkson has had more chances than he really deserved and the three of them have paid the price for it.

I love the fact the show was more than a car show. Don't get me wrong, im a serial petrol-head to . But the reason i gravitated to the show when Clarkson first appeared was because he made it fun . His one liners was just hilarious Initially it was spontaneous and didnt appear to be scripted. It seems the viewers ( myself included) loved the off the cuff silly pranks and bizarre incidents they seem to get themselves into. So they though " Oh lets do more of that"..But instead of just letting things happen, it was scripted and i feel that became obvious and not so fun as the viewers kinda predicted what will happen

And that's my point - when they did the caravanning episode a few years ago, I genuinely thought they'd actually set the thing on fire - now I watch the show rolling my eyes at it's utter predictability.
