Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

And Jimmy's aged enough since completing his scenes in ROTS in 2003 and '04 that he wouldn't need much makeup to look like Bail Organa should look at that point in the timeline. It would be great to have him back and perhaps share at least one scene with Leia, even if they have to use a different actress or a stand-in and Carrie Fisher's voice to accomplish it.

In a trilogy that was pretty schizophrenic in terms of performances, Smits falls squarely in the great category. He brought what could've easily been a nothing character to life.

He definitely ranks up there in the Top Five Prequel Actors with McDiarmid, McGregor, Liam Neeson and Christopher Lee.

I saw that! It's also only the second time I've seen Stephen Colbert since his Comedy Central show went off the air, so it's amusing to see him with a white beard and shaggier hair.

I like the regal white outfits worn by the Alderaan delegation in Episode I but yeah, Jimmy Smits made for a much better and more interesting Bail Organa.

IIRC, Bail Antilles and Bail Organa were not intended to be the same character. Antilles was supposed to be a nod to the OT (Captain Antilles, Wedge Antilles) rather than being the same Bail.

I could be wrong and need to reread some BTS details to see if I got it right.

They later retconned "Bail Antilles" to be the same character, as evidenced by the Deleted Scenes calling him Bail Organa when that name was never used in the theatrical version of the film. Just another change they later made to try to keep the continuity flowing as smoothly as possible.

He's also appeared twice on Rebels, once in the flesh (so to speak) and the second time as a hologram. Jimmy Smits didn't provide his voice but they were still good and fun cameos, and with the Rebellion beginning to get underway and becoming a serious factor I imagine they'll be bringing Bail Organa back in some future episodes.
I did find it odd that they didn't get Smits to voice his character on the show, while they've made the effort to bring back James Earl Jones and Frank Oz. Maybe they figured it was such a bit part that it wouldn't have been worth spending the extra money. Oh well.

Interesting. I think it is a rather unnecessary change, but I can live with it.

Actually, it's the other way around. He was "Bail Organa" in the original script, but was changed to "Bail Antilles". The EU always treated them as two separate characters, as late as Darth Plagueis in 2012. And since the film itself says "Bail Antilles", they are two separate characters in the new canon.

I guess the guy in the Deleted Scene is Bail Organa and the guy who ran against Senator Palpatine in the election for Supreme Chancellor was Bail Antilles, because the Blu rays identify the first Senator as Organa.

Oh well. Close enough. All the more reason why it's probably for the best that the old EU has been decanonized.

In my life I've met two other people with the same given name I have (and it is a rather rare one), so...

yeah I've met at least three over the years and mine isn't exactly common either, so it's hardly impossible for two characters to have the same name.

Indeed, it's a common trope in fiction to unrealistically avoid having two characters with the same, or even similar names simply to avoid confusion, where in real life it's extremely common.
Hell, when I was at school, I remember there being something like four Daniels, three Stephens, a couple Michelles, two Ricks (both with the same surname as it happened, despite being unrelated) several Davids, Helens, Christophers, two blokes called Chi and probably several more I'm forgetting, all of them in the same year (or "grade" for the sake of the yanks.)

So yeah, "Bail" may be the inner core equivalent of "John" while Antillies could be along the lines of "Smith", or be the name of a very large old royal family that married into the aristocracy of several inner core planets over the centuries, including Alderaan & Corellia. Hell, with the EU gone from continuity, Wedge's backstory is open season again so he may indeed be Alderaanian and the grandson/nephew/third cousin twice removed of that bloke in TPM. Who knows?

For all we know, Bail Antilles, Wedge Antilles and Captain Raymus Antilles could all be distant cousins of one another and hail from similar backgrounds on Corellia and/or Alderaan or another one of the Core Worlds of the Old Republic.

I've always found it a little surprising that Raymus and Wedge Antilles weren't related. I know that kind of thing is common, there's a newscaster out here who has the same last names as me, but as far as I know we're not related, but SW has always struck me as the kind of universe where they like to make those kinds of connections.

NYPD Blue is a show that had two Johns on at the same time and both were regulars. And before them, David Caruso played someone named John.

It's been ages since I've re-watched the trilogy, but I remember Smits having like a dozen lines total between Episodes II / III. Pernilla August of all people should be miles ahead of him.
