Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

These aren't just movie characters to me.
This isn't just a sequel.

I knew that since the first time I saw the original films, starting at 4 years old or so.

I remember seeing the RotJ comic book adaptation. .. and even seeing drawings of the characters I had a connection with them.. they were both my friends and my heroes. Even though I'm older now then the characters themselves are in any of the OT films, I still look up to them.

Which is why I'm still so very oddly tepid about it.. about hearing any new dialogue coming from these characters.. or seeing them interact with each other. It won't be Hamill, Ford, and Fischer interacting, it will be me seeing Luke, Han, and Leia interacting.. these people that are more than just "movie characters in a sequel."

I wish I could explain it better how I feel.. but I think a few of you will understand.

This is how I feel about Kirk, Spock and the rest of the TOS characters. :techman:

Me too.:bolian:

I wouldn't describe my feelings about TFU as "tepid", but other than that I agree completely. I saw ANH at a drive-in with my family during it's first run (I was three and a half years old), and I, too think of those characters as friends. It's going to be very special for me to see them again.

Yeah people say Lucas was only concerned about the merchandising, but I think he must have also realized how incredibly attached kids had become to Han, Luke and Leia, which is why he just didn't think it would be right to kill any of them off in the OT.

Yeah I wrote "tepid" because I couldn't find the right word. "Tepid" isn't quite it, but it's close. I still can't wait

^^Eh, from my experience Star Wars fans were a pretty docile bunch during the re-releases in 97 and even up to the release of The Phantom Menace. It was only after that moment they turned into a bitter, hate filled bunch of Trekkies who miss the glory days.
I was 11 when the special editions came out and thought the changes were bullshit even then. Apparently my bitterness was ahead of the curve.

Some think that he already has, at least vocally, in the most recent DVD and Blu ray versions of Return of the Jedi. George's digital team inserted a voice that sounds an awful lot like Watto yelling something that ends in "Everybody!!!" during the Tatooine celebration sequence that was added to the movie during the 1997 Special Edition.

It happens just a moment before the scene wipes to show Coruscant.

then again I never got bitter about any work of fiction...
The only work of fiction that I've ever been bitter about was the ENTERPIRSE finale.

I was even okay with the Star Wars prequels, and seeing all those countless fanboys being so mindbogglingly butthurt over those movies always made me feel genuinely sad for them.

Finn - good name.
Poe Dameron - ugh.
Rey - ennnnnnh.
Kylo Ren - ugh.

I love Star Wars but they have the stupidest names anywhere. Han. Luke. Leia. Lando. These are real people names. Kylo? Rey? Poe? Ugh.

Han, Leia, and Lando are real people names? Or maybe they've just been in circulation for 30+ years.

As for card numbering, the Topps cards weren't always in chronological order. For the most part they were but not always.

Maybe not Lando or Han, but I have known a few Leia's in my lifetime. (Although, it was pronounced LEE-AH rather than LAY-AH).

If anyone - namely film directors - wants me to pay with my time and money. Yeah, I'll be bitter.

If the public shouldn't criticize any work of fiction (or non-fiction, for that matter) why put it out there for public consumption?

I walked out of a midnight showing of "Resident Evil: Afterlife" upset my time was wasted with a thin story and shoddy direction.

In regards to the prequels: Even if one wasn't a "Star Wars" fan, the characters are inconsistent and not very charismatic, the story is kinda predictable...and the special effects at various times don't look as 'special' as they should.

Movies are expensive to watch. And, even if one was to watch a film on DVD, that is time being spent. One expects to be entertained, not insulted. (A reason I decided to watch the three hour "Wolf of Wall Street" again was because I like dialogue, performances, the way the film draws you into the cocky loser who thinks he's untouchable....until reality hits).

For those of us whose passion is film directing, writing, and/or acting....those films that have the viewer thinking 'TARBUN' or 'FUBAR' become even more noticeable to those 'passionate' individuals.

I don't think anyone is actually saying that... it has only been noted that the reaction to the prequels was unusually persistent, hyperbolic and over-the-top in certain quarters.

The worst thing that some aspects of the Prequels did to me is disappoint and annoy, and that's about it. I expected more and wanted more out of them, but they are what they are and as subpar and downright idiotic as some part of the films are they're not the childhood-raping hazardous waste spills that many fans think they are.

At the end of the day, they're the backstory to the OT and as inferior as I feel they (generally) are to the original movies they're more entertaining and better films than some fanboys and critics like to paint them. Frankly, as stated above, the Enterprise finale was much worse and a bigger turkey than most of what's shown in any of the Prequels.

Yeah I will agree that the prequels were really no better or worse than the typical summer blockbusters, and were entertaining enough diversions in their own right.

The problem for me is that the OT was just at a whole other level from the typical blockbuster, and was an instant classic that blew pretty much everything else out of the water at the time. I wanted to see the prequels at least try to approach that level of quality, but they never even came close, except for a some very brief moments here and there.

For me it's just not enough that the prequels are "pretty good" movies or "better than their reputation." When we're talking about freakin Star Wars, I kinda expect a LOT better than that.

It was expectations that killed the prequels for the fans, but the general public really had little problems with the prequels. I think it's easier to accept whatever they give us as with the prequels I refuse to give in expectations.

Well Lando is a surname. (Actor Joe Lando is the only example off the the top of my head). Han is a Chinese name.

The reason people would feel tepid is because despite bringing back most of the original cast, the teaser decides not to show a frame of footage of any of them. The closest thing to a familiar sight is the falcon, and it's rendered with shaky cam and a bit of lens-flare. So it really does not evoke any warm fuzzies whatsoever.

"...and it's coming to your galaxy - next summer!"

Movie patron (as overheard by Mark Hamill): "Yeah, and it's coming to late night TV about two months after that!"
