On Peanut butter sandwiches, yes. I can't stand jelly of any kind.

On any other kind of sandwich, no.

Butter on sandwiches? No. But I do almost always put butter or margarine on toast (both white and multigrain bread) and when I order toast in a restaurant I ask for butter to be put on the slices.

I never have butter on grilled cheese, at least not the ones I make myself.

Depends on the kind of sandwich I'm going for.

For the more intricate ones, I usually hold the butter and replace it with mayo/remoulade or the like.

I eat a lot of sandwiches. One of my favorite foods.

:techman:

Never put butter on one, though. Never even occurred to me.

To each his/her own.

:)

I noticed that too, Warped9! It struck me as an odd statement to make in the middle of the show, but maybe it was also a statement of the era? Maybe it wasn't common to butter them then?

When I grew up, they were always buttered. Now I usually don't to lower the calories and carbs. But then again, I don't eat sandwhiches so often anymore. I've tried to cut out bread as much as possible.

Also: English muffins must always have something on them. Butter. Margarine. Fruit. Something. Anything. But a dry English muffin just doesn't taste right and needs a layer of some other food item spread across the surface.

I grew up in a buttered-sandwich household, but never cared for butter/margarine and never use it now. Unless it's on something hot enough to melt it.

The only time the bread in my sandwiches gets buttered is if it's a grilled cheese sandwich. The grilling process is kinda dependent on it. All others, no.

Same.

I find this "tradition" of buttering all sandwiches strange and disgusting!

I remember my grandmother buttering sandwiches, and always thought it tasted weird, but unless it's grilled cheese, I don't use butter.

This.

Contrary to popular and longstanding dietary traditions in many parts of this country, not everything has to have butter on it.

My "regular" sandwiches usually have mayo & mustard. I put a very little butter on my fried egg sandwiches (toast)....before a good helping of mayo.

Regular toast I butter heavily, but it's never real butter either way, but Shedd's Spread/Country Crock. Good & soft all the time, but tastes a lot like butter.

Outside of a sandwich that was grilled, I've never heard of buttering the bread for a sandwich. I can't imagine using buttered bread for my turkey sandwich.
