I was reminded of this a few days ago when a character in Murdoch Mysteries noted with mild displeasure that a sandwich someone made for him was buttered.

Now I've always found this personnally odd having grown up in a family where sandwiches were almost always buttered. And even now knowing for many years that it's not a universal thing it still strikes me as odd.

At any rate how do you prefer your sandwhich? Always buttered, never buttered or dependent on the kind of sandich?

I don't eat a lot of sandwiches, but when I do... Never buttered. No mayo, either.

But I do love butter (preferably unsalted) on a thick slice of really good, dark bread.

As a general rule, I don't eat sandwiches. I might from time to time if there's nothing else available, but I don't really like doing it.

Technically a hamburger is a form of sandwich as far as I'm concerned. Usually burgers are not buttered when served in a restaurant or fast-food joint.

But when I have homemade burgers or I think of it I sometimes ask for them to be buttered when I order one in a restaurant. Mind you only a bit of butter.

The only time the bread in my sandwiches gets buttered is if it's a grilled cheese sandwich. The grilling process is kinda dependent on it. All others, no.

Grilled cheese with bacon sandwich. Mmmm...

With a few sweet pickles on the side and a nice cup of coffee. :techman:

^ This, except that we also sometimes do grilled barbeque pork sandwiches, too, so those get lightly buttered as well.

Sometimes, I'll butter the toast on which I eat eggs. Otherwise ^.

Depends on what I have..

Peanut Butter and Jelly NO I DONT (I dont want reg butter on that :D)

I guess really I dont butter anything except just BREAD AND BUTTER!

I don't use butter at all. I don't even keep it in the house.

Butter on sandwiches? Uggh. Butter and meat don't go together.

This. I don't butter my bread very often, either, unless I'm having toast.

Depends on the sandwich. Sometimes butter (or margerine), sometimes mayo, and sometimes nothing at all.

Grilled cheese sandwiches. I haven't eaten very many in about 10 years though. That needs to change. I'm craving a grilled cheese now. thanks.

I used the expression "buttered" in my OP, but margarine (for many) is an acceptable substitute.

I checked "Depends on the kind of sandwich," but as I thought about it, I realized I use butter on very few sandwiches aside from those which are grilled. (You just can't do a proper Reuben without butter.) My mother grew up in a house where every sandwich got buttered, though - even a peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich.
