"Caretaker"-Will a special guest appear? Possible spoilers.

There really is no excuse for no Nicholas Courtney appearence in NuWho. Why use Martha Jones in the Sontaran two-parter in series 4 instead of the Brig, I won't ever understand. Even in the Sarah Jane Adventures, he appeared only when Martha Jones couldn't have been used. What the heck, RTD?

And Moffat simply should've used him in series 5, pronto. Shame on you, Moff.

He died in Feb 2011 following a "long illness" - we don't know how long, so it's possible he was too ill to do much more than a brief appearance in TSJA.

I understand that. But he was visibly better and capable in 2008, and he was more than willing. Its just a shame that he wasn't there.

In any case, I hope we won't live to regret a non-Ian appearence. Russell looks capable of pulling an appearence, so why not?

Unless the Doctor comes out and tells IAn who he is there's no way Ian wound know anything about regeneration as far as we know. It might be even more interesting to have them meet as strangers again. But in reality if William Russell were cast in an ep. somehow I think we'd know about it ahead of time.

Would we...?

And in my newbie research I've read that there was a web-isode with Paul McGann and they managed to keep his apperarance a secret until release.

Like I said earlier, there is a comic where Ian meets #11. And, indeed, Ian is doubtful about the Doctor's true identity.

ETA: One thing I really like about the Who franchise is the willingness to incorporate supplemental materials (books, audio, comics) into the canon.
Depends upon what you mean by kept secret.

It's true that it wasn't a known fact for either of them, but, there were certainly strong rumors (Tom Baker actually let the cat out of the bag himself on Facebook or Twitter for his appearance). True, the rumors weren't necessarily given credence, and it was a nice surprise that the rumors turned out to be true, but, it wasn't a complete surprise that came out of nowhere.

There's been no chatter, whatsoever, that I know of, that William Russel will be making an appearance in this Series, only the natural assumption that him being on The School Board of Governors allows for a perfect opportunity for an appearance.

I think it'd be funny if they do meet that they don't recognise each other, or at least Ian doesn't recognise the Doctor (due to regeneration) and the conversation is too short for the Doctor to tell him who he is. Maybe Ian could even say "you remind me of someone I used to know" or the Doctor could say later on "I'm sure I recognise that guy".

The Doctor's been through 12 regenerations and close to 2 thousand years older by now. Would he even remember Ian and Barbara?

He remembered Susan in the Akhenten episode, although that was before the Trenzalore years.

There's also dialogue overheard from filming the finale with the Doctor saying "Susan" but he might be talking about a different Susan

Well Ian was one of his first ever companions. Then again I think it'd be funny to see them both meet and neither of them recognise each other.

So with the next episode, the Caretaker, taking place largely at Coal Hill, is there a chance we'll see Ian again in some capacity? Yeah, there's the immortal/haven't aged a day thing from SJA, but they can always ignore that like they did with the regeneration limit.

See, here's where I think people get the wrong idea. They remember part of what Sarah says. She doesn't say they ARE immortal. She said that she's heard rumors. There's a word of difference there, don't you think?

How difficult is it to imagine that, at some point, the younger versions of the characters had an adventure in modern times, creating that very rumor? Or perhaps someone saw a photo of them still looking quite young with a modern background? Rumors are ridiculously easy to start. Sarah should know; she's had Mr. Smith start any number of them over the years.

That is a great explanation for those rumors!

William Russel recently had a cameo in the drama Adventures In Time And Space as a security guard, although I'm not sure how his health is now.

I'd say he's in remarkable health, puts some people 20 years his junior to shame. He has attended loads of signings this year.

I'd be surprised if he was to cameo, it doesn't really seem the sort of thing the series would do, but I'd be happy to be wrong.

Then again there was Janet Felding spotted doing something with Capaldi

To do with her charity project. She used to be an agent and represented him - or his wife, one of the two.

I'd rather not see the old companions without a spectacular story that needs them there. I got plenty of fan service last year, let's see some new ideas.

Um, yes? Unless he'd forgotten about Susan, so then maybe yeah... but how likely is it? Very unlikely.

For the sake of argument, would a parent necessarily recognise one of their children's childhood friends many, many years later if they hadn't seen them at all in the interim?

If he remembered Clara after 800 years (bar a brief meeting 300 years in) then remembering Ian wouldn't be too much of a stretch.
