The Enterprise isn't a real device, so it can do whatever the plot needs it to. If you can accept that it can travel through time by flying around the sun, then hiding it in the ocean isn't really that much of a stretch.

I'm still waiting for explanation for how the Enterprise can go in space. ;)

That's a better, more precise description, to be sure. I was oversimplifying things for the sake of brevity. But indeed, Richard Matheson's screenplay makes its very clear that Kirk needs both halves to be a complete human being . . . .

But if the transporter can do all that, we're really going to balk at underwater spaceships?

Almost everything that a starship can do that's worth writing home about is fucking ludicrous. Somehow, being under water is being singled out, even though we do shit like that all the time in the 21st century.

But hey, we've never seen it before so off with their heads and so forth.

It's really not a fan uproar. Look at this thread for evidence of that. There's just a select few fans getting their panties in a twist over it. Makes me wonder: Did these people ever even like Star Trek? Or were they just in it for ship porn? TOS was almost never about the goddamn ship.

If TOS needed the ship to fly backwards and leak grape jelly that cures the common cold, they would have done it. Although given what I've seen of the animated series I'm shocked they never got to that episode. The ship is nothing more than a plot device that allows them to get to various planets. It's basically the Tardis without the spinning.

The centrifugal force would cancel out the artificial gravity and crush the lower decks.

But only with modifications. And even then, the Delta Flyer still leaked.

Yea,but, they were stuck in the Delta Quadrant. The Enterprise would have access to a better brand of Leak Guards

The Flyer was also swimimg to the very core of a water planet, and so had a LOT more pressure to deal with than Enterprise, which isn't far below the surface.

I would be concerned with antimatter containment failure while underwater or airborne. If a failure occourred, you could a devestated planet.

As opposed to, say, landing a malfunctioning Bird-of-Prey in the middle of San Francisco? :)

Very much so. Anytime you have a real or fictional antimatter fueled spacecraft near, in the atmosphere, on the ground or in and underwater you can have catastrophe if fuel containment is lost.

Well, from what we know, the planet is doomed anyway if they fail their mission with that volcano.
And the Enterprise appears to be working 100% and isn't under attack, so antimatter detonation isn't a concern. It's not like Starfleet vessels are known to go around randomly losing containment and blowing up for no reason.

    True...

But as 'Sindatur' implied above, being in Federation Space, the Enterprise would have better access to a more complete modification than the Voyager could possibly have; not just leaks, but everything.

Plus, as I mentioned, the Delta Flyer went very deep -- miles down -- which was where Janeway was willing to take the Voyager (after modifications).

I bet they sprayed the inside with that plastic spray stuff that the fake Billy Mays sells on tv. If you can use it on a boat with a screen door bottom, it can keep a space ship from leaking.

Works for me. Debate closed.

I have no problem with the idea. If I accept alien life forms, time travel, warp speed, transporters etc., I can accept this.
