Now there's something I haven't seen in ages.

And I'm not talking about Garak's disturbingly tight Tom Cruise Underoos.

I vaguely remember it but is there a reason the last one is cut off?

It happened once in TOS. Norman the android from the episode "I, Mudd" somehow made it aboard the Enterprise as a red shirt and took over the ship.

That's not the same as saying that it makes sense or belongs in a movie script.

    It's Khan.

There is no reason to believe that Norman was a member of Starfleet, but instead just someone who snuck on the ship wearing a uniform. Norman was impersonating being a member of Starfleet. Abrams has very much implied that John Harrison is in fact a member of Starfleet, and comes from Starfleet. John Harrison is NOT impersonating being a member of Starfleet.

Quote from JJ Abrams about John Harrison:

For the record, Norman the Android masqueraded as an Enterprise crewman wearing a blue sciences/medical shirt, not red.

Androids are extremely boring. Just fucking awful.

A waste of a good Cumberbatch if they went that route.

My bad...I was going from memory and thought he wore red.

So, if John Harrison was human, it would be awesome, but if he was revealed to be an android, without changing any of his scenes in the movie, it would be extremely boring?

Androids aren't necessarily boring, but the writing for them could be.

No biggie, I just wanted to make sure you had the correct information.

I once made the mistake of thinking he wore a gold/mustard command shirt and even wrote somebody a letter containing that erroneous information.

Leaning towards either Garth or April right now, personally. I could be wrong, of course.

Looking back at JJ Abrams and having read some of the comics, one of my deepest fears may be coming true. A number of his works involve a conspiracy, which the protagonists must identify and confront.

In the comic "The Return of the Archons", it was insinuated that there is a conspiracy involving Starfleet. Admiral Pike is aware of this and is in contact with one of the conspirators. He is told by his contact to keep Captain Kirk in check. In the comic, the captain had uncovered an experiment on Beta III that was initiated by Starfleet. Now, from the Empire Magazine, the readers are informed that "He’s an incredibly brilliant strategist who is aware of various truths that Kirk is not privy to." Oh, frack!

My first thought was that Harrison is just another redshirt who lost it and used his position to commit acts of terrorism.

I guess he could be a genetically-engineered Starfleet operative (real name Khan) who lost it and committed acts of terrorism.

A person who knows things that captains aren't privy to wouldn't be a disposable person. That person would have to be higher up in the chain.

When I think of the character Harrison, I see a lone wolf version of Brigadier General Hummel, from "The Rock".

That's because his real name is Jack Harkness and he works for

Torchwood: outside the government, beyond the police. Fighting for the future on behalf of the human race

Is it possible that Harrison is working for Section 31? Or something similar?

I suppose Section 31 still exists in the altered timeline, though we don't know for certain. As to any connection if it does....who knows?

It seems that they just created a new character to play around with.

A British dude that blows up London and a city in the USA because he's pissed at Star Fleet.

    I'm kinda disappointed.

San Francisco. I understand attacking this city. What is important about London in the 23rd century?
