Actually, one small correction: after the Pike-era sequence, The Rift jumps forward not to Kirk's five-year mission, but to the post-Star Trek V-era; one of the very few books to take place during that particular time frame, and (along with the Pike section) one of the reasons I like this book so much.

Judging from Pocket Books' predictable schedule, Child of Two Worlds should be out electronically on Tuesday November 24.

And that's me looking like a pedant. Sorry about that - I do get carried away sometimes but I don't mean to be churlish.

Oh, no offense taken. I was just humbly admitting that my memory failed me there. No irritation or sarcasm intended. Thanks for the correction, sincerely.

Hell, I pedantically corrected somebody else on a point of BATMAN trivia just a few hours ago . . . :)

    Hi Greg,

As a fan of D.C.Fontana's Vulcan's Glory, I was curious how "compatible" your book is with that one. For example, do you use Caitlin Barry as the Chief Engineer?

    Thank and have fun,

Caitlin Berry is definitely the Chief Engineer in my book, and has a couple of big scenes.

    Thanks for asking!

Wasn't there a Kirk era novel that had a little bit of Pike/Vina on Talos 4. The telepathic aliens that let them stay there were able to let Pike know what was going on with Spock and the Enterprise. I can't recall the title.

I believe it was published after Star Trek 5 as it had Kirk using his rock climbing skills. And I think Spock had been bitten or stung by some native creature.

Michael Jan Friedman's Legacy. There's a mystery that goes back to Pike's time, and we also see the Talosians telling Pike about what's going on (as I recall).

A question for you, Greg. Do you use any of the characters in the Marvel Comics' Early Voyages series in this book?

The Indian woman (whose name escapes me at the moment) is serving on the bridge throughout.

Basically, there was no way to reconcile all the different versions of Pike's crew we've seen in the books and comics, so I cherry-picked the parts that worked for this book . ..
