I've been re-watching Deep Space Nine and I got to thinking...with all of this Star Trek Into Darkness talk, what TNG-era character ancestor would you like to see in the upcoming movies? Of course I don't mean Guinan, Soran, or the Borg which was already discussed, but the ancestor of a TNG era character. I was thinking about it, and it seems to me that Chief O'Brien would seem to fit into this new era. I would love to see an ancestor of O'Brien, maybe an Edward or a Séamus O'Brien as maybe an engineer's mate or petty officer aboard the Enterprise or another ship and I would love for Colm Meaney to play that person, but looking a little different. Let's say his hair is short and red, or black and he's got green or hazel eyes or something. Looking like an O'Brien, but not looking exactly like Chief O'Brien. Whom do you think would be a good fit from the TNG era as an ancestor?

los2188, isn't this nearly identical to the premise you used for this thread, back in September?

We've got all this newly-released info generating much discussion and speculation, and I'm just not sure that a "what if?" thread recycling a topic less than three months old is going to be adding a lot to the mix.

I don't really want to see someone's ancestor being played by the original actor at all. Frankly I find the idea as it is portrayed in Trek to be almost laughable. Do the writers of Trek really believe that so many people follow their parents line of work in the future? Is a caste system the only way the Federation's moneyless economy can run without masses of people becoming holodeck addicts with no real world pursuits?

For the record, I do have the same job my father did and I fully understand why some people do follow their parents footsteps. If I grew up on a starship, I could see myself wanting to join starfleet. But although I followed my father into teaching, he didn't follow his father into working for the phone company and my grandfather didn't follow his father into making fur coats and my great-grandfather didn't follow his father into baking. I can't go back any further than that--which makes it even less likely that someone can play their ancestor 150 years ago.

Jimmy Jack Crusher. Played by Will Wheaton. Dies a most horrific death, and someone quips, "Well, he'll certainly never have any annoying teenage whizkid descendants."

Trek's handling of the grandfather character has always been hamfisted and lame, no thank you.

How about Mister Holm? One of my favorite minor characters, might be from a long lived species.

Can't we just have a scene where Scott Bakula walks into to frame and punches Scotty in the gut then immediately runs away?

I don't know. My next door neighbors belong to a long line of firefighters. Five generations so far. And, of course, there are family farms that go back many generations as well.

How long have the Picards been in the vineyard business?

    ... and I don't care.

Colonel Worf to Docking Bay 2. Colonel Worf.

No. Ladies and Gentlemen I have it right here: Homonym - one of two or more words spelled and pronounced alike but different in meaning.

    Now... Take him to Detroit!
