"The Republic of Molossia"

I saw this while browsing Cracked, and I thought it was pretty amusing. The Molossian website

So far, Molossia has declared war on East Germany, launched a space program, minted several coins and posted several pictures of their 'President' in various fancy uniforms. Not bad for a nation of twelve people, surrounded on all sides by a much larger, more legitimate nation.

I'm so incredibly amused by this whole thing, from the mere existence of a hilariously bite-sized not-really-a-nation, to the fact that there is not a single trace of irony on the entire website. I might have to visit this place some time, because it's easier than going to an actual other country for vacation.

The whole site reads very tongue-in-cheek to me, especially if you read their history. They're just having a bit of fun.

Man, for a moment I thought we really were in possession of an island off the coast of Cuba but as it turns out Ernst Thälmann Island was actually given as a gift to the GDR, just renamed in honour of Ernst Thälmann and as a friendly gesture to the GDR.
Also, the GDR didn't cease to exist just like that, it just joined the Federal Republic of Germany, so i think there is a good chance of finding someone to negotiate a peace treaty, after all.

I think it is quite brilliant. The "Note to Teachers" is very explanatory of the depth of thought put into the site and the teaching that can result.

Reminds me of a little known comedy in which Paul Gross (Due South's Frazer) as Mayor and Priest of a small Canadian coastal town that forms a republic after the government yanks its fishing rights, and threatens to nuke Canada's Wonderland with the help of a Russian Nuclear sub that has drifted inland.
