Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

It'd be pretty entertaining to have Lando and Wedge return in some formal leadership capacity in the New Republic government, either as civil officials or perhaps in positions of military authority. Billy Dee's character won a lot of affection in ESB and ROTJ and unless J.J. and Kasdan decide to be very strict about how many of the Old Guard get into the new film I think it'd be a good idea to give Lando at least a few scenes just so we know what happened to his character in the three decades following the Battle of Endor.

Going through the OT characters who'd make at least marginal sense to resurrect in one form or another if the Abrams/Kasdan team would happen see fit:

    Luke

    Leia

    Han

    Chewbacca

    C-3PO

    R2-D2

    Lando

    Wedge

Yoda (Force Spirit voiced by Frank Oz)

Obi-Wan (Force Spirit portrayed by Ewan McGregor with possible CGI morphing between the character's Prequel appearance and that of Sir Alec Guinness)

Anakin (Force Spirit portrayed by Hayden Christensen)

There are also other Rebel leaders we met in ROTJ who could be revived as much older versions of themselves such as Ackbar, Mon Mothma and General Madine, though once you get past the main characters in the OT the clutter starts to build up fast unless J.J. and Lawrence write an older Mon Mothma a glorified cameo as the aging matriarch of the Rebellion and New Republic and she wouldn't get much screentime at all (not that her character got much to do in the previous films - in JEDI she didn't have much dialogue and all her scenes as a younger Senator and co-founder of the resistance against Palpatine were left on the cutting room floor of SITH).

I really want to see the return of Tusken Raider #3. His fate was never resolved in the OT.

Not a leader per se, but Nien Nunb really earned his place. I'd expect that what's left of the Empire would put a contract out on him, since he probably saved quite a few ships, if not the whole frakkin' attack.

I'd appreciate even just seeing him once in the background.

I'd say these ones are pretty much guaranteed, aren't they?

The droids everybody agrees on. But there are quite a few fans out there who don't want to see the other characters again, dragging up every geriatric joke and excuse they can think of to exclude them from a story set 30 years after JEDI. I'm a fan who acknowledges the age issues, but I don't want to exclude the characters because of them.

Some fans apparently think that Han, Leia and Luke are going to be hobbling around on walkers and in wheelchairs complaining about loud noises or something.

I'm sorry but anyone who doesn't want to see Luke freaking Skywalker in a SW sequel trilogy is an ass.

Yep, it's Luke's turn to be the wise old jedi master.

Well, old anyway. For all we know, he could still start off the movie by complaining that he still hasn't gone to Tosche Station to pick up his power converters.

Power converter pickup delays lasting 35 years? Thanks a lot, Space Obama.

"Seriously? What kind of nonsense is are trying to pull? That's not an excuse."

"Fine. I'll tell you the truth. You see, I had to rescue my sister from my father, who turned out to be Darth Vader, only I didn't know she was my sister until after I kissed her."

"Now you're just being cheeky ... just take the damn things."

I'm thinking he'll probably be some other high-ranking officer in the former Imperial fleet. Some ringleader of an assault or plot against the New Republic....some plot point along those lines. Of course, who knows this early out. Just because they said they won't be slavish to and follow the EU doesn't mean they won't cherry pick elements from it such as Thrawn and cast an actor like Weaving in such a role.

When comes to Luke, Leia, and Han I really want them in the movie, I just don't necessarily want the movie to focus on them. I was looking forward to them playing the supporting mentor roles to a new generation of characters. If it's going to be a sequel to the OT set within the Big Three's lifetimes you really can't not have them in the movie.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I will say that I hope their use of the characters doesn't overly stretch my suspension of disbelief. Having Luke suddenly doing Dooku or Palpatine twirls would be nonsensical given both his age ... and the fact he rarely did anything that athletic in the OT (the carbonite chamber and Palpatine's throne room being exceptions, of course). But there's plenty of room to have him (and the others) be active and in action-based settings, without having their actions seem unrealistically (for the OT, anyway) athletic.

BTW, this thread has really got me back into a Star Wars mood. I think I'll fire up my Phantom Menace blu-ray if I finish my research article before it gets too late in the afternoon.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

That's my primary concern with Luke and Han. In Episodes II and III it wasn't that bad to see Yoda, Dooku and Palpatine leaping around doing CGI fips with their respective lightsabers (even if a few shots were beyond gratuitous and silly just to attract the younger "wow, that was KEWL" demographic), but trying to make sixtysomething Mark Hamill look like he's in an Avengers or Spider-Man film by doing huge leaps and spins, dodging enemy fire like he never did when he was younger and more a lot more nimble will just look pretty bad, especially if they decide to do it more than once.

Bring our beloved OT heroes back, but don't turn them into obvious CGI cartoons.

There's now talk that Ben Skywalker (Luke's son from the EU) will be in Episode VII or one of the other sequels, but it's probably best to take anything this early with a colossal grain of salt even Yoda would have difficulty levitating.

Strange nobody seemed to complain about old Qui-Gon running and jumping, I'd fully expect to be in full command of the Force and be able to all of that stuff too.

If I get to see a 60ish Mark Hamill taking up the Obi-Wan role for a new generation of Jedi hopefuls my inner 6-year-old may just die of pure joy.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

After thirty years as a Jedi Knight I'm sure Luke will have matured to the status of wizened Master and role model for any Jedi who were inducted into the restored Order after the fall of the Empire. Math tells us that Luke won't be but a handful of years younger than "Old" Ben was in Episode IV by the time the new film is set, so he could definitely pull off the role as the aging hero of the Rebellion and the man who revived the Jedi from the ash heap of history, restoring them to glory.

"Master Skywalker, how will we know the good side from the bad?"

(*Luke looks down and gently smiles*)

That'd be a nice little moment.
