As if anyone could notice the difference if the guy under the suit changes.

    I think people would notice.

I mean, we came close to having David Prowse play Chewie and Mayhew play Vader. But Mayhew wanted to play a good guy. There are many subtle tics to the way he moved, as well as Chewie's disposition, that can attest to the soul someone can put into a character, covered or not.

Most Star Wars fans know when they are suing a remote controlled R2-D2 is being used, and when Kenny Baker is inside that can. There is subtle (but definitely important) character stuff that can only be attributed to a certain performer

If they can recast Kirk, they can recast Chewie.

Kirk isn't an especially complex character. (Not that Chewie is, either.)

I would love to have Mayhew reprise the role - for sentimental reasons. But that (for me), ultimately, won't add to (or detract) from the film itself.

Perhaps, but that still doesn't negate the fact that having one of the Solo children turn to the dark side as in the EU isn't also logical symmetry for the story arc moving forward.

It makes sense in the EU and it would make sense for the film's plot.

That's false. It could make sense in the film's plot, but likewise it could also make no sense it all. It depends on the particulars, including who the characters in the film are.

I hope they didtch the entire EU. Really. Start with something fresh and imaginative. As soon as a familiar name enters the story, or even a familiar character type (like we see one of Han Solo's kids but he/she has a different name) the audience who has read the EU will be watching the movie form that point on using theEU as a measuring stick of some type, measuring either how clos or how far the film sticks to the beats of those books. Even having my favorite character, Mara Jade, would do that

Plus, these franchises need to let go of thign a little. They need to engage their imaginations and tell a new story. STiD was hinred by bringing in a villain form the Prime universe in.. the hindrances came in big ways and small ways (mall like the idea that there had toi be 72 torpedoes because that was how many crwmembers were on the Botany Bay, but 72 was simply a "hey I recognize that number) but did the plot little good - and I don't believe for a second that the Enterprise crew ina heavily samaged ship that was leaking crewmembers could have removed the cryotubes from every torpedo in the three minutes it took them to do it) and all of these issues could have been avoided if the writers challenged themselves to write soemthign new and not do fan wanks.

Like Star Wars A New Hope and The Wrath of Khan, the new film, should have very simple plot beats that are not convoluted. Terhe should be a sense of adventure and grit. And the style of the other SW films should be adhered to (like the wipes, and the fact that each film depicts a short amount of time with no flashbacks). These are the important things JJ and his tema need to do over everything else.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Let's be honest, the type of fans who are going to be enraged if they use Jacen, Jania, Mara, Corran etc. without strictly adhering to their EU based material are the same ones who are going to be enraged if a character shows up in one of those roles but under a different name.

I don't think these are the kind of fans who's opinions anyone is interested in listening to but they themselves.

I certainly don't care if they stick with the EU or not. Honestly, I think the wisest approach would be pretty much what the Clone Wars series did. Tell your own story, cherry pick the EU stuff that works and is relevant, discard the rest.

I also don't get the irritation of some people who talk about TCW or EpVII contradicting the EU as if the EU hasn't already contradicted itself in a about a million different ways.

When EU stuff started popping up in TCW I started trying to read up (since I'm way behind the times) and what I found was an incomprehensible mess of contradictory accounts, clumsy retcons and all kinds of nonsense. There's even different degrees of canon which just seems ludicrous to me. Usually when something is canon, it means as far as anything else is concerned, it *happened*. Not "it happened unless something contradicts it in which case it still happened but not quite the way it was described."

Then lengths people have gone and the contortions made in an effort to include as much as possible is mind boggling.
I was astonished when I found that they've somehow managed to shoe-horn in the old 'Jedi Prince' series of children's books. I remember liking those as a kid, but even then I saw them as something separate to what I was reading in the Zahn trilogy.

Pretty much this. If they can't find a believable way to insert a species like the Yuuzhan Vong into a storyline and not repeat the worst, dumbest excesses of the post-ROTJ Expanded Universe books and graphic novels then just skip 'em and forget they exist. They might end up being decanonized anyways once the new EU "guardians" decide what is and isn't kosher in the post-Endor timeline.

If you can't drop an EU concept into a new movie script without creating a huge, sloppy mess then don't even bother. I'd rather have more subdued and bland human villains that make sense than over-the-top LucasBorg rampaging across the galaxy anyways.

You might be on to something there. Bring in the Borg as the new threat to the Wars universe. ;)

Leia and Han naming one of their sons "Anakin" is one of the silliest things I've ever heard. "Anakin" has no personal meaning to Han, and as far as Leia is concerned, with regard to "Anakin Skywalker", he tortured her for information and blew up her planet. There's no logical reason for Han & Leia to name one of their sons after him. Stupid.

    All this has happened before...

whelp - he did save Luke in the end. And he didn't blow up Alderaan - Tarkin did.

In the EU she does confront Anakin's force ghost about torturing Han.

My Anakin Solo grip is the idiotic reason they killed him off.

(Lucas or Lucasfilm thought people would confuse him with Anakin Skywalker)

Anyone else wondering how it could be that the movie starts shooting next month and they have no one cast?

Indeed. This is Abrams' movie, and he is big about keeping secrets whenever he can.
