If I were to hazard a guess it would Blu-ray rights since they are often a big mess. Since Japan and the US are the same BD region and the US sells media like BD, DVD, CDs, etc. for much cheaper than the Japanese market, some Japanese consumers will import American versions to save money. In order to counter this, the Japanese are often stricter with giving out BD rights or stipulate, as a condition of the contract, long waiting periods before said show or movie may be released on BD by the rights holder in the states here.

The reverse importation stuff is definitely partially to blame for the long waits we have to suffer. It's also highly probable that the US licensors don't get all the materials they need to make the dub until the show/movie is completely done due to Japanese contractual nonsense. It's one thing to wait until the BD grade video materials are done to send that to the licensors, it's another to make them wait until ALL the BDs are released to actually do anything.

I still do not understand this.

    http://www.pinoyanime.tv/space-battleship-yamato-2199-ova/

How can Ep 19 have almost 50,000 views. Ep 20 almost 20,000. Ep 21 over 30,000, and Ep 22 almost 11,000.

Come on people. They have not been aired/put up yet. Its just mind boggling!!!

Also, all the eps prior with the exception of 3 haven't gotten over or anywhere near 20,000!

People are more hyped this time around. Plus BD Raws came out weeks ago, so people posted stuff so other started hunting.

The BD for Chapter 6 came out a few days ago and I know episode 19 is online someplace. Episode 20 might be as well. Not sure about the others yet...they'll be coming as soon and the encoder can do whatever it is they do.

    My BD arrived Friday.

I wonder how many of the people that dismissed this show as a remake before it started ever got around to seeing any of these episodes.

I wonde if their foot would be in their mouth now considering the quality of this series.

I think everyone understood this was to be a reboot of the franchise, without question. However, the unimpeachable quality of this reboot has taken the path of what many had hoped would happen with Nu-Battlestar Galactica and NuTrek. Now, I personally never had a problem with NuBSG and NuTrek, but those two franchises definitely took a different angle to rebooting than Yamato did, and I think many would agree that Yamato was done in a way what the others should have been - truly faithful to the original while using state-of-the-art visual effects and fleshing out the general story. Even the 2010 Yamato live action movie, while still good in many ways, doesn't come close to the 2199 effort.

This should become the new benchmark for how all properties should be revisited, IMO.

I can't wait to see 2199. It looks awesome. Hope it gets to America soon. I thought nuBSG was a totally different take on that franchise, it was a re-imagining. Nu-Trek was a cross between a re-imagining and a reboot. I think Nu-Trek captured the characters perfectly while adding some additional twists to their interactions and friendships. I am not to fond of the look they went for in some cases, especially of Enterprise.

I disagree, at least when it came to Trek. The one thing people didn't want was for AbramsTrek to cover the same ground TOS and the TOS movies covered. People may have hated the reboot tossing out all the previous continuity, but it left room for new stories to be told, which was why STiD was so disappointing in its use of TWOK elements. With Yamato, things are very different. There are probably a lot of people who aren't familiar with it in Japan, never mind non-Japanese audiences, so they can do a straight remake and set up potential new seasons without problems, because it's new to a lot of people.

Plus its kind of hard to criticize how nuBSG handled its reboot when it lasted 4 seasons (73 episodes), a miniseries, and 2 DTDVD movies, a spinoff movie, and a short spinoff series of 1 season (19 episodes) for a total of 92 episodes to the original's 1 season (24 episodes) and spinoff series of 1 season (10 episodes) for a total of 34 episodes.

One thing that has been missing from Star Trek for a long time was the character interplay. Specifically how the characters got along with each other and the at times playful banter between characters. Especially evident between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, but also between Sulu and Chekov as well as Scotty and the Enterprise. The newer series tended to lack this or develop it later into their series. Sisko and Dax had this from time to time as did later one O'Brian and Bashir. Picard and Data sort of had this, but the banter part was usually La'Forge and Data or Riker and anybody. Voyager didn't really have good banter...or at least not consistant banter. Enterprise lacked it aside from Archer and Tucker.

The newer version of Star Trek seems to attempt to get the banter going again with Spock, Kirk, McCoy, and now also Uhura. But because it is an action film, it doesn't have the time that a more relaxed tv drama would have week to week.

For Yamato 2199, the character interactions have changed from the original, but in believable ways. With more females the dynamics change, and with characters like Kodai not being the old 1970s hotheaded youth archtype, it comes out more realistic....well for a sci-fi anime about a flying battleship.

Part of that is because they want to cash in on selling four episodes at a time, a model that simply doesn't exist here any more. (Unless you are Aniplex and you don't care about selling more than a few thousand copies).

Splitting a 26 episode season into two parts is already pushing it, in my mind.

QFT - and the four episodes of the 6th Disc were (IMO) - the best yet. They really did use all the major aspects of the original episodes; but presented it in a really fresh way, not only making good use of the new characters they introduced; but doing so in such a way, it didn't make any of the situations feel forced or really different from the original - just better executed, and better animated.

I also LOVE the new take on the Gamilus/Iscandar dual planet relationship; and the new take on Dessler himself. Yes, he's a true sociopath, but he's not stupid, or petty. He makes full use of all those around him to further his own goals - and in the end, the ultimate goal is all that matters to him.

I'm really looking forward to see how they wrtap up the final four episodes, and I truly hope this isn't the last we see of this production team working on retelling the other two Space Battleship Yamato series/sagas of "The Comet Empire" and "The Bolar Wars"

And even if they do get an English dub released (and I really hope they DON'T try to re-do the "Starblazers" motif with it beyond the name - but with Voyager Entertainment holding the license, I think I'm out of luck); I do not regret spending $85.00 U.S. a pop for each Blu-Ray, as the sub-titles were well done, and I got to watch the new episodes within a week of the release of the Blu-Ray in Japan.

If they do keep going with re-doing the other Yamato series like they've done with the original Yamato story, (and sub-titling them in English) I'll be getting those Blu-Rays direct from Japan too.

I'd really LOVE for an English dub of this to just follow the actual Yamato 2199 script/story as presented - and just ditch the "Starblazers" aspect. <-- I'd buy that up in a heartbeat

Man, 19-22 were as epic as some of those leaked videos made it out to be.

I just wonder how episode 20 will air on TV given the extra time. They're going to have to figure out something... or just buy the commercial time themselves.

The only things they're changing for the Starblazers 2199 dub is the name of the ship (to distance the show from WWII in Asia) and some random bits of technobabble for some reason.

Episode 20, with all the OP/ED and preview, is 27 minutes long. Commerical TV has slots for about 22 minute long shows. That is not going to be a fun edit. Even if tey manage to remove the OP/ED and preview the episode is still 23 and a half minutes long.

Full Metal Panic! TSR last ep was 45 mins long. Commercials in Japan are different from here in the states. We are lucky if a 30 min show is actually 20 mins long with all the commercials. And an hr long show only lasts 45 mins here in the states with all the commercials.

Now on for some good news.

Here is something new with our favorite female pilot:

FMP aired on a paid channel at close to midnight.

Yamato airs in the evenings on a highly sought after anime timeslot. And MBS is already editing down their shows to squeeze in more commercial time as it.

Yeah, it's in a prime time slot, so unlike other late night anime, the commercial time is actually valuable.

Given that they were able to make it 27 minutes, I would hope that they have a deal or a sponsor or something in place... because if they strip out everything and cut a few minutes, that episode is going to be a mess. lol
