Roberto Orci

No one knows exactly, but word is Paramount didn't like his script; it was too "Star Treky". There was allegedly a battle over the direction the screenplay should go in which eventually led to Orci being removed from the project. It's been said that Orci is hot headed and difficult to work with, which didn't exactly endear him to the people over at Paramount. This isn't surprising considering the outbursts we've seen from him.

Making him director of this huge franchise when he has no directorial experience was a very bizarre decision to begin with, and makes me wonder how competent the people over at Paramount are.

On a side note, Orci is a complete hack. Terrible writer.

I think he still got credit as producer. But I don't know if this title means he still had some creative control or was just something that was part of his contract.

There are a lot of rumours circulating about Orci's exit from ST3. The facts are: Orci, Patrick McKay and JD Payne wrote a script, which would have included William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Orci was pencilled in as director (although IIRC never officially announced as such?) and pre-production had gotten as far as scouting shooting locations (including South Korea) and pre-vis of action sequences. John Eaves was tasked with designing new Federation ships.

Orci's script was rejected (none of the reasons why floating around the internet are confirmed), the film was delayed and a new creative team brought together which included Justin Lin as director, and Simon Pegg and Doug Jung as writers (none of whom ever saw Orci's script). Sean Hargreaves designed the Federation ships.

Nimoy's son recently revealed that Leonard was asked to return for the third movie but had to turn them down due to his failing health.

Bob Orci recently said on Twitter that he's not involved with Star Trek 4, being written by McKay and Payne.

Why sigh? Those are true answers. If the script wasn't good enough, why would they ditch it? If they were confident that Orci could deliver, why would they drop him?
Pure speculation, but if Shatner and Nimoy's participation was integral to his story, Nimoy's ill health (and subsequent death) may have been it's undoing.

Because it wasn't good enough. Because he wasn't good enough.

Which is bologna. We have no idea what happened. People come and go from Hollywood projects all the time and it has nothing to do with talent.

That is probably often true. But why is what I said bologna? The script wasn't good enough for the people in charge. That doesn't mean it was undeniably terrible, it means it did not live up to what they wanted from it. And to the same people in charge, they clearly decided that there was someone better for the job of directing the film. Either that or they ditched the script and director because they were totally the best ever and the execs were envious and angry. Or maybe Orci uncovered a massive conspiracy that the studio execs were a part of and he had to be silenced.

Actually that last one might be accurate. :alienblush:

Turns out some rumours regarding Bob's ST3 were true after all.

Is he joking or serious? No wonder he got fired if that was his story. If he resets the timeline the JJ movies are over. I'm not particularly attached to the JJVerse myself but I can see why Paramount turned this idea down.

I thought Beyond was pretty "Trekky" itself apart from some of the Fast & Furious action sequences so I doubt that was the reason Orci's script got shelved. It had to be because his script would have brought the Kelvin Universe movies to a close.

To be honest, that sounds awful. What's done is done, stop toying with it. Let these guys have their own stories. I get it, you needed to check Khan off the list. He's the quintessential Star Trek bad guy of the movie franchise. But then move on. You gave Kirk the sacrifice element of command and he respects his duties.

Let them move on.
