I have no idea whether this will be better or not, but they DO have the advantage of not needing to introduce the characters. They can hit the ground running with the story they want to tell.

Whether or not that will necessarily translate into a better film is yet to be seen.

Maybe they'll get the size of the ship right this time ?

Define "right", and show me a Star Trek where the lead ship hasn't been repeatedy rescaled to look as kewl as possible.

It won't need the rather grating (IMHO) contrivances to bring everyone together and put them in their rightful positions, which is already a significant advantage.

I'll also know from painful experience not to watch it at IMAX, which detracted from my first viewing of XI.

But then this one is going to be in 3-D, and there's no guarantee you local theatre will bother with a 2-D option.

Any and all forms of writing are fluid and dynamic until publishing (or in this case, theatrical release). In some cases, it remains fluid and dynamic after the original release and is released again later in a new form.

No draft of anything is ever perfect. There are always changes to be made. Maybe you wanted a character to vault over something, but the actor can't do it and you don't want to use a stunt double. So you change something, either the scene writing or the prop, to allow filming to continue. That's just an example, obviously.
