A lot of people, not just TOSers, gave up on this show for a few reasons:

    1) it's science fiction. Not a lot of people have a lot of patience for something that's labeled as such.

    2) is on Sci-Fi. Further alienating the audience, as they realize they have to pay for all the other crap on there and cancel the channel.

    3) It's highly serialized. That's partly why my husband gave up. Miss one, you usually miss something important to understand the next one. Case in point: I had to pause several times last night to explain this and that scene.

I could go on and on, but my company just arrived.

I wonder what's going to happen to Scifichannel in the long run. Their flagship show has been dwindling for some time while Ghosthunters, ECW and silly B-movies seem to be the big ratings winner at Skiffy

I don't see the correlation between quality and ratings. In fact, if there is one, it's probably negative for the most part. While little watched shows like The Wire get canceled, shows like According To Jim and America's Top Model go on and on. I just feel lucky that we've gotten four seasons of Battlestar Galactica. Thoughtful, intelligent television is all to rare.

Amen. The Wire was a fantastic show (possibly HBO's best show) and yet it barely got any ratings. Babylon 5, my personal favorite TV show, also got so-so ratings (although I think it ended up doing very well for TNT). Brotherhood, on Showtime, is another critically acclaimed show that gets very few viewers. BTW, if you haven't checked out that show do yourself a favor and do so.

Sure, there are plenty of great shows (LOST, The Shield, House, NCIS) that get great ratings. However, look at TOS which got low ratings. DS9 got low ratings as the show went on and most people argue that it got better as it went on.

They lost 300 thousand viewers from season premier to their second ep

There really isn't one. Shows like CSI:Miami get great ratings, but I dare anyone to tell me that watching David Caruso putting on his shades and spouting corny one-liners is high quality stuff. It isn't, but it's a popular show. And popular shows get mega-ratings. It's rare to find a quality show with fantastic ratings. There are some out there IMO, but not as many as the popular shows.

The 1.1 rating posted above is the national rating, not the coverage rating. The coverage rating should be a 1.3 this week.

Never the less, it's a 16% drop in viewers and 18% among adults 18-49. Not good.

    I'll post a chart shortly.

    Here's the chart.

Note: I'm assuming a 1.3 coverage rating for the show this week, that could be wrong, though it shouldn't be off by more than +/- 0.1 points.

A couple other notes: The Mini-Series is counted as two episodes, season one opened with two episodes the first week (one rating for the two hours), same goes for season three and the same goes for the TV Movie "Razor".

Hmm, I'm curious how this will continue - an upswing as in S1 after a drop for the second (or third, for that matter) episode, another decline or simply the same.

I won't argue with the stupid part. But I'll say most people lack taste and, for various reasons, tend to shy away from entertainment that challenges them.

Thanks for those! I remember that the figure for the S2 premier was unusually high and thus the drop was rather steep.
It's interesting that the drop for S1 and 3 was pretty similar. The S4 drop is quite a bit more substantial. It's down to the level of S3 again, pretty much IIRC.
