That is a lot less than I thought it was going to be. Scifi's media advertising was decent, but they should have done a lot more, like rerun the entire series from the beginning at a reasonable hour for the entire month of September.

Wow, that's rather surprising, I must say. Thanks for the comparison list.

Well, damn. Still, it's better than the Gates are doing, and sci-fi probably won't cancel what most critics have been calling the best show on television just yet.

I'm not surprised, it's in line with the S2.5 ratings.

This is probably the hardcore audience now, because they almost all came back, even after a seven-month hiatus.

You can see quite a drop after 2x01.

As for the two-hour premiere, I was expecting at least a 2.0 and then another slight dropoff from there.

I recommend a mod sticky this then they can update it each week. Since ratings is a question each week it would give everyone a single place to look.

Yet they say the total viewers are up from the S2.5 average. So does that mean that the 1.8 reflects more total viewers watching TV than last year?

Not surprising. Hopefully it will be enough to stayon the air.

Hmm, I guess I'm not the only one who decided to stop watching.

I had assumed a rating in the range of a 1.7-1.9, so this seems about right.

I'd quickly like to note that Sci Fi has added about 2M new homes over the past year, so HH ratings might be slightly lower in relation to last season. The season finale last season attracted about 2.1M viewers, so the premiere did bump up a little.

It would be very interesting to see how many of those 2.2M viewers are new to the show, and how many have stuck around.

In the coming weeks a clearer picture will be known as to how many have stopped watching.

But to have gone from a peak of 4.5M for the mini to 3.1M for the season 1 and 2 premieres to 2.2M for the season 3 premiere, with such a large advertising push and all the critical acclaim is probably a little frustrating.

Though if you ask me, not the least bit surprising.

Well at least the One Year Later thing and the huge wait didn't scare off viewers, it's more or less the same as the finale last season...

But they sure aren't making it easy for people to want to stick around. I think Moore should think about a plotline that will let him wrap it up next season at the latest. Maybe that's better than letting things wander around. Right now, it seems like Baltar has pretty much got to die this year (perhaps sooner) and the other shoe has to drop re: what the frak do the Cylons want. After that, some inkling of Earth and a solid direction to follow. A year or two could be the perfect length of time, really.

Nothing wrong with this. It led the network, held pat from the finale after and extended haitus, and did all of this without its traditional Stargate lead-in and an hour earlier. It's still earning all the acclaim, and it's owning on iTunes.

    Business as usual.

There's plenty wrong with this, IMHO.

Russ is right vis-a-vis the ratings numbers drop-off from S1 to now and there isn't much room left for Galactica to drop before things get dicey. What I'm really worried about is a drop after the premiere a-la 'Scattered' to 'Valley of Darkness.' A 1.6 would really suck.

Galactica clearly hadn't found its floor by that point. I think the odds of a similar fall are extremely unlikely, given that 1.8 is basically the median of the range we've been living within since "Epiphanies".

In short, I don't think anything's really changed. I also think the comparisons to the miniseries are quite out of place. "33" aired nearly two years after the miniseries, and nearly four years prior to "Occupation". By this logic, we'd have to argue that "33" lost a full point from the miniseries, and that isn't really accurate based on the content itself. It's a skew to say the show has dropped from a 4.2 to a 1.8.

How could there be such a drop after Scattered? Did people think Adama wasn't going to come back?

I'm a little suprised, I thought it would atleast be slightly higher than the finale. It's a shame that so much stock is put into ratings, they do a poor job of estimating how many people watch.

I predicted BSG would do similarly to the 'Gates. Looks like it exceeded that expectation, anyway. Good on it.

My other post was too crowded.

Here are a few of the comparison figures between the show's first three season premieres and its mini-series:

    Mini-Series Part 2:
    Total Viewers - 4.5M
    A18-34 - 1.1M
    A18-49 - 2.6M
    A25-54 - 3.1M

    Season 1:
    Total Viewers - 3.1M
    A18-49 - 2.2M
    A25-54 - 1.9M

    Season 2:
    Total Viewers - 3.1M
    A18-49 - ?
    A25-54 - 2.1M

    Season 3:
    Total Viewers - 2.2M
    A18-49 - 1.0M
    A25-54 - 1.2M

From the show's PEAK (mini, part two) the show has lost roughly 51% of its total audience, 62% of its A18-49 audience and 61% of its A25-54 audience.

Though its probably unfair to judge it from that, a more fair analysis would be from season 1 to now (29%, 55% and 37%).

Definitely disappointing. I was hoping for something better. I can't say I'm totally surprised because it's not a show you can just start watching. You really had to have watched it from the beginning.

The good news is that it seems to have kept its audience from last season's finale. If they don't fall off from there, they should be all right.
