Hospitals are required to stabilize you whether you have insurance or not. If you need more intense treatment things get dicier as you're not likely to get the best of treatments and if you cannot pay either the hospital writes it off, raising the costs for everyone else, or you elect to go untreated. In some cases you pay what you can and go into utter debt and misery until you declare bankruptcy.

It's all very complicated made "slightly" "easier" by everyone now required to have health insurance.

Didn't think I had to elaborate on the obvious.

    This legislation is stupid.

The cost will have the politicians (government) storming in to "help" fix a system they themselves created. Government run Healthcare. That is socialist.

You can flag just about anything as Socialist these days, since we're not living in individual cabins in the woods. Question is just whether it's better to keep our current system (fairly broken, as anyone anywhere near medicine will tell you) or if it's worth getting together as a society and seeing if we can't do better.

Firefighting is socialist, but it's kinda nice when they just show up at a fire, isn't it? Schools are socialist, but looking at how retarded we are even WITH teachers trying to help us, probably better than everyone being homeschooled by mouthbreathers on THAT downward trajectory.

It's ALL socialist, just a matter of whether we think the service is worth it or not. Since we pay more and get less than just about everyone, seems worth a try...

You are just making the case to get government out of all this stuff.

The government has forced a model that relies on businesses to "provide" heathcare.

    I think that's wrong.

Get individual business out of the picture of providing heath insurance.

Does you business provide your auto or homeowners insurance?

The free market WILL make it affordable to all. But it's never been allowed to.

Your argument is basically that it won't work, forcing the government to pass other measures. The problem is that the previous status quo was horribly broken, which is what forced the government to pass this measure. You want to know what would have moved the quickest towards exclusively government-provided health care? Striking down the individual mandate in the Supreme Court, but preserving the rest of the law. The requirement that insurance companies can't deny coverage because of preexisting conditions (which is popular for almost everyone) would bankrupt insurance companies in no time (as opposed to this, which has shown itself to work relatively well on a smaller scale in Massachusetts). That would have resulted in the government having to step in.

If anything, the PPACA prevents a government run system rather than increases the chances of one.

My argument is that government should have been "involved" in the first place.

But as you say, "can't deny coverage" sounds great, so that will be the standard.

    We'll see what happens.

    Yup, and I can't wait.

The idea that health care shouldn't be the responsibility of the government, much like police or fire care, is ludicrous. Heck, even SimCity has the (admittedly municipal) government building and maintaining the hospitals and clinics. :p

(For the record, the SimCity argument was not serious, and anyone who takes it seriously has no joy in their lives.)

So I take it you are for single-payer universal health care.

 I love "irony nuke." The rambling didn't bother me; I expect some in a long filibuster. But the lack of reading comprehension was mind-boggling!

Drop the current employer-based healthcare system. Get business out of the picture of providing insurance. Sounds like a recipe for implementing a national, state-sponsored, tax-funded universal healthcare to me.

It seems like people who are terrified of socialism -- or rather, their usually-mistaken idea of what socialism is -- use the term for anything that benefits people other than themselves. We used to just call that doing things for the common good. And it has as long a history in the U.S. as rugged individualism. Hard to tell these days!

I'm going to assume that you meant "My argument is that government should NOT have been "involved" in the first place" above, but even then, your argument doesn't make any sense, and just comes off like a series of Frankensteinian platitudes about how "socialism and government BAAAAAAAADDDD!!!" without any kind of coherent or workable idea of what to do on your own. AKA: the standard Republican plan.

You say get government out of healthcare. Then you say to also get employer sponsored insurance out of healthcare as well despite that being how most Americans are already covered. So now, instead of covering the smaller number of Americans who are not already covered by either Medicare/Medicaid or an employer sponsored health insurance program, which was the goal all along (making sure everyone was covered), you've advocated for the majority of Americans losing their existing forms of insurance and having to start all over with new non-government and non-employer provided insurance... because "free market!!!," I guess.

So, you're not actually about freedom of choice after all, since you're also eliminating employer sponsored healthcare. And you're not actually about keeping the government out of people's healthcare, since you're advocating for forcing people to get their own private insurance that's not associated with their employer in any way; and who would enforce such a measure, exactly?

But that's what I meant about it's pointlessness (at least from a legislative standpoint). It wasn't even an actual filibuster meant to block a vote, since he didn't even have the support of his own party for that, it was just a very long non-topical rambling speech on the Senate floor which had a scheduled ending to conduct the vote, which he actually voted in favor of anyway (the vote was 100 to 0) despite protesting it.

Now, it did symbolically position Cruz as the leader of the "if we lose this game we're going to angrily throw the board and all the pieces into the air and go home" tantrum throwing no-compromise extreme wing of the Republican Party that's wasted the government's time by trying to repeal Obamacare 41 times and has now forced us into a shutdown, so bully for him there. But that's about all it did.

Infraction for trolling. Comments to PM, not that it matters to you.

I thought you hated it here because the mods are worse than the KKK since they ask you to **gasp!!!** use multi-quote?

Thanks for proving my point about you wanting the drama and attention of a ban instead of doing the adult thing and leaving on your own if it's so awful here, Alex:

    ___________________________________________

And since you're deliberately choosing not to use multi-quote now, you've earned an infraction for spamming as well. We'll speed the process along, since you hate it here but can't leave on your own apparently. Personal responsibility, right Alex?
