    1) This Is 40 - C+
    2) Easy A - A-
    3) Behind Enemy Lines - B+

Caught this one on TV over the weekend and it was what I remember it as: a very cookie cutter action piece.

But what elevates this to a B+ is the strong performances of Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson.

Hackman is always controlling the screen in his movies and his scenes with an equally strong Joaquim de Almeida are the strongest in the film.

Wilson is playing basically the same role he does in every other movie of this era. But with Burnett being a smartass, fish out of water is a nice change from the Arnold-type, who simply kills everything in his path.

But the evil characters are not threatening, right down to the main one, who chases Wilson in a sweatsuit straight out of the Adidas Jerk Collection. While everyone loves an action piece with lots of explosions, how many times can the same plot be recycled?

    11. To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday (✩✩✩½) - Live TV - A man is unable to get over the death of his wife and talks to her as if she was real, much to the dismay of those around him. It has a good cast that includes Peter Gallagher, Claire Danes, Wendy Crewson, Kathy Baker, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Michelle Pfeiffer as Gillian. It's got some good drama with a lot going on… A troubled man, a concerned couple with issues of their own, flirtatious girls in bikinis and summer by the coast. I thought it was an ejoyable piece.

    12. Moby Dick (✩✩✩½) - Live TV - Saw the 1956 version with Gregory peck. It totally ripped off The Wrath of Khan, but the whale was badass!

    13. Just Go With It (✩✩✩) - Live TV - A plastic surgeon gets his assistant to pose as his ex wife so that he can impress a girl. Stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. It's aout as enjoyable and funny as any other Adam Sandler movie, but the premise and a lot of the reasoning they use to push the story along is extremely weak. Most of my points are for the actors and the fun. I also noticed one young girl in the movie. She really got my attention and I was wondering where I saw her before. Then I realized that she played the young Snow White on Once Upon a Time and was excellent there. She has "it" and if she plays her cards right, she can go far.

    10. Last Stand: B

Planet Terror, this part directed by Robert Rodriquez, is a bio-zomibe attack type film. It's enjoyable in the throwback manner of which it's intended. It wouldn't be my first choice for rewatch of this type genre film and I didn't find the portions with the BBQ stand/gas station character all that integral but it was fun. I like Michael Bien so it was great to see him with a co-starring lead in this. Props for humor when the love scene is about to really get started and suddenly you get the "missing reel, sorry for the inconvenince" sight gag and the next reel picks up with the place on fire!!

Death Proof, directed by Quentin, is stalker horror film led by Kurt Russell. The first half shows how creepy, passive aggressively dangerous he can be and him killing a group of early 20-somethings. The second half he has the tables turned on him. Russell plays "Stuntman Mike" and it's great to see him get his due in the end. The funny, unanswered question when the film ends is that the Mary Elisabeth Winestead character was left behind at some backwoods property of the guy's car they took out for a test drive. He was left with the idea she was a quite adult film star. It doesn't help she was dressed in a cheerleader outfit. Tarrentino with his ties to TN uses the state in his films so this one was interesting in that the second half of the film is in Lebanon TN, just 20 so so miles down I-40 from me.

Zero Dark Thirty I thought was a tense film to watch. The actors all did a great job showing the stress, anxiety and pressures of the task at hand. It becomes very personnel to Chastain's character(Maya) after being on the periphery of one attack, losing colleagues in another and then being shot at directly. I don't think the film, as good as it was, is necessarily a Best Picture winner but it's good enough to be in the discussion at least. This is literally my first real exposure to Jessica Chastain and she did indeed deliver a great performance.

Last Stand: As I stated in this film's thread it was fun but not great. With the middling expectations I had it reached those for a B grade. It's a solid renter for sure. It was a guilty pleasure I allowed myself. This time of year I've got gift cards to burn so I'm a bit more free with my personal rules on seeing theatrical films. Johnny Knoxville isn't in the film enough or overtly to ruin it. It makes me wonder what his agent pulled to get second billing. Jaime Alexander deserved second billing. She's at least throughout the whole film and not just mainly the last act like Knoxville.
I see the film as a type of metaphor for Arnold's "comeback". In the film Ray(Arnold) has moved out to smallville USA to get away from the rough police work in LA he was active in at one time. So when the escaped Federal drug lord comes screaming his way a transformation occurs. Easy going, know everyone in town Ray has to reawaken the tough cop he was that has been idle inside him. So you see a more sluggish Arnold in the first act and by the end he's into the fight, those skills are alive and kicking. Kinda like how Arnold's hoping his post-Governship career goes I'd guess. The big plot hole in the film that I see is:
for a drug lord escaping by car why are spike strips never put down? Blockades are tried but why no spike strips? How fast the car and skill of the driver don't matter with blown out tires.
While I admit it's a renter I did think more Arnold fans would show up out of if nothing else curiosity. It opened in tenth place. Jeesh.

Watch the James Coburn Flint films on DVD the last couple of days. Picked 'em up for cheap from Big Lots a couple of weeks ago. Obviously a James Bond '60s spoof, Coburn's Flint is America's answer to M16's super spy, though he doesn't work directly for the government. He's rich, has women at his beck & call, is super smart, and has a lighter that has 83 different uses.

Too bad the movies aren't that good.

Watched a couple of movies via Netflix the other night. First up, a documentary about the history of rap music produced & directed by Ice-T. Maybe if I were more into the musical genre, I'd have been more interested...I just watched it out of curiousity.

Followed that up with Margin Call, which has a really good cast that included Jeremy Irons, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Demi More & Zachary Quinto. And its based on the market crash of '08. Well worth watchin'.

Had a double feature after work last night. Got into Music Monday's Prince movie just as my shift ended. The music was good, but the actin' was terrible, which I guess I should have expected.

Followed that up with Mama with my friend Maeby. And that one was pretty good, considerin' its a creepy kid horror movie. Liked it quite a bit more than the last creepy kid horror movie she & I went to see a few months ago.

Got a plan to see Broken City tonight, and maybe Promised Land...

Spent the day watchin' DVDs recently...

Started off with John Wayne's ThatM, the other "John Wayne as a pilot" movie from the action pack DVD set I bought awhile back. I suppose it was an alright movie, not great, though. Robert Stack looked crazy young in it, too..

Followed that with Dave Chappelle's block concert movie. Not a fan of the musicians he put together for it, but I did like that he did it.

Followed that up with the horror remake of Black Christmas...which I only watched 'cause it had Dawn from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Ishka from DS9. Terrible movie, even for a horror film. I may look for the original, though, since it has Margot Kidder and is bound to be better than the remake.

Watched Bad Teacher Thursday...that was a pretty funny movie. Started to watch the unrated cut of it, but got distracted. Will have to get back to it some time.

Went out to see a couple of movies Thursday night.

It was the last night for Tough Guy Cinema's They Live, which I enjoyed quite a bit. Roddy Piper is not a great actor, but that was okay for this alien invasion movie.

Followed that with the ten o'clock premiere of H&GWH 3D, which was awful. The only reason I even considered seein' it was for a four-minute preview of the new GI JOE comin' out in March. And 'cause it was free.

Last night, I watched IB...and its my new favorite Brad Pitt movie. I think Christoph Waltz was better in Django Unchained, though.

Gerard Butler had me laughing the entire time, but as with my previous review of Easy A, we have another Friends star in the wrong role. I can't buy Jennifer Aniston as Nicole. She stands her own next to Butler, but whether it be typecasting or the fact she can't act, she's just not that interesting.

There is also the totally unneeded Jason Sudeikis character, who appears in a handful of scenes, but never adds anything to the movie. Take those out and put some more scenes of your leading couple in to improve their relationship.

A stellar date night movie, but not the Mona Lisa.

Went to see Doctor Who 'An Unearthly Child' yesterday. And since I was at the theater anyway, I went to see The Last Stand.

Not too terrible a movie, considerin' some of the other action movies in Arnold's career. Johnny Knoxville was actually funny, too.

May go see it again, since a friend of mine wants to see it.

Came out to the Ritz this afternoon to see the old Robert Mitchum movie, The Night of the Hunter, about a "preacher" who believes the lord provides by sendin' him to widows and takin' their money. The movie has him marryin' the widow of a convicted murderer who stole $10,000 from the bank & killed the bank employees in the process. The preacher marries the widow and terrorizes the two children who know where the money was hidden.

Pretty good movie, too. Robert Mitchum certainly had presence.

Waitin' for a showin' of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2D to start soon.

And I'll be followin' that up with one of my favorite Kevin Costner movies, The Untouchables, which is showin' here in 70mm tonight!

One quibble I have though, is that it had a lot of excessive killing just to take down one guy. If you're into a lot of shooting though, this is your thing. It was also fun to see Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone reuinite after Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Red Tails - I really enjoyed this film. The arial combat moves with the camera direction felt very 1st person most of the time. The divebomb on the German destroyer especially. If this was one of, if not the last thing, on Lucas's to do list before selling to Disney I feel he closed up shop well with this film.

Hansel & Gretel - Note, just cause I have a gift card doesn't mean I should use it. These things burn holes in my pocket, I have a rule dammit! I've seen worse films, really I have but I don't like to even pay for films I can anticipate are going to be this lowly graded by myself(and then maybe it's a tad high?). Cheesy and predictable for most of the film. I literally predicted about 3 lines of dialogue within reasonable variation. I called it with Mina. It's at best a solid renter with pizza and few beers in you. It's only 95minutes long.

This movie is not like any romantic drama/comedy I've ever seen. It was a lot more subtle, and honestly, a lot more jarring. Adam Sandler is great in this movie (Even though i still think his best movie was Happy Gilmore, but I know that's a minority opinion) but there were a few slow spots. Also, I think JJ Abrams learned the art of Lens Flare from PT Anderson and this movie because man there was a ton of it. I did like how things picked up in the end, especially the meeting between Berry and the Mattress Salesman. Overall, a decent movie but maybe slightly overrated.

I enjoyed that movie. The car flipping over and the harmonium being randomly dropped off at the curb was a little odd, but I like odd.

First movie of the new month, and its the zombie love story Warm Bodies.

It was silly, but in a fun way. And Rob Corddry was especially funny as the zombie M.

Too bad its the only new movie we got this week...

    17. The Lucky Ones (✩✩✩) - Live TV - Three soldiers, one retired and two on leave travel by rented car to get to where they need to be. Stars Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins and Michael Peña. It's reminiscent of Planes, Trains & Automobiles, but it's not as comedic.

    18. The Tourist (✩✩½) - Live TV - A woman on the run from the authorities brings a tourits she met on the train into her troubles. It feels way too much like an Angelina Jolie/Johnny Depp vehicle, but it's enjoyable in parts.

    19. Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! (✩✩) - Live TV - A small town girl wins a date and the affections of a big name actor, much to the dismay of the small town guy who loves her. Stars Josh Duhamel, Kate Bosworth and Topher Grace. I'm surprised that this got a box office release. It feels very much like a TV movie. Simplistic story with cheap production values.

    20. The Watcher (✩✩✩) - Live TV - An FBI agent is taunted by a serial killer who gives him a day to find the women he's about to kill. Stars James Spader and Keanu Reeves. What's interesting about this one for me is that I read an article about a movie that Keanu Reeves tried to back out of but did anyway because he didn't want to get sued. He even claims that his signature on the contract was forged by someone else. Then lo and behold, I see that the movie, this movie is on TV the very next day, so I decided to check it out. It wasn't great but it wasn't that bad either. It was a decent thriller.

How long can Steve Carrell play the dopey ne'er-do-well? I for one am tired of it.

This was again, saved by Emma Stone, who is quickly becoming my favorite current actress. She shines in any role they give her, though I would like to see her play dramatic and not have the opportunity for a one liner and see how she does.

It's a great date or afternoon in movie with the girlfriend (the latter was true for me), but really doesn't offer more than that.

    5) What To Expect When You're Expecting - B+

The second half of my Sunday afternoon movie date, this one is a step up in the romantic date comedy movie category. The best parts of the movie were Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford as the couple that loses their baby and has to push through that. The only part of this movie that I felt was real and not sunshine and lollipops. Who couldn't dislike Dennis Quaid as the ex-race car driver and Brooklyn Decker as his forty years younger wife?

This movie did have it's down moments, pretty much any scene with Cameron Diaz and Matthew Morrison at all and Jennifer Lopez was cringe-worthy the entire movie. Am I the only gone getting sick of these huge movies with plenty of stars that are multiple stories that never intermingle?
