Re: Thatch kicks the bucket -

Saville ruined a few hundred lives, Thatcher hundreds of thousands, probably more. We're still living in the mess she built.

Saville was certainly a worse person, but there is the issue of scale.

i think thatcher did a tremendous amount to damage this country, but repeated bad policies is not something equatable to child molestation. if you don't think thats a stupid comparison then that says more about you really.

    No.

Old politicians commenting the death of an old politician.

As far as I understand it, this is basically it in a nutshell.

Did people actually wait for her to die?

I can't imagine there were many people who awoke every morning with the habit of checking the obits for Lady Thatcher.

Its hardly just bad politics when you decimate towns and communities, strip away self respect, destroy industries, give away the countries infrastructure, turn the police into your own private army, deride empathy as weakness and set up greed as an admirable philosophy.

Child molestation is individually far worse, but doesn't tear apart the whole fabric of a nation. Thatchers legacy was not just a difference of opinion about interest rates...

i'm sorry, but you're trying to argue that on the whole, raping children isn't as bad as the thatcher government. i mean i agree that it was clearly bad back then, but as an arguement that way madness lies.

honestly i think this'll just drag things off-topic. so i guess, agree to disagree?

I don't think we are that far apart - I agree, to the individual, Savilles actions were far worse.

Agree to disagree - certainly !

There's no honest and decent way to defend Thatcher's political career. Morally speaking, she earned for her passing all the compassion she exercised for Bobby Sands. Insisting on more is unjust. Besides, manners is not much of a virtue, all you need for that is hypocrisy. Politics already has enough, we don't need more coming out of graves.

It does seem appropriate to comment on her political career. She was a charmless, graceless version of Reagan. Since all Reagan had was movie star charisma, the less attractive, dowdy Thatcher had an amazing career in getting elected in the first place. She couldn't even fake being nice but the English still elected her!:wtf: What does that say about them?

On the other hand, I've never known whether only the Falklands War saved her by inspiring imperial bloodlust. Or whether people were really as indifferent to the IRA bombing in Brighton that nearly got her as it seemed here in the US at the time.

My epitaph is simple enough: Another one has escaped justice.
