    So...

Apparently, the updated Encyclopedia has an entry on the Kelvin timeline transport in distress, complete with an image of the actual CGI used. Has anybody got the book? Any chance of a scan or a close description?

From what I gather, the one big surprise is that the ship has a TOS style bow deflector dish, jutting out of a TOS style cigar hull that just happens to be integrated to the bow of the saucer. That is, in the style of that NCC-1000, USS Horizon fan artwork from a few years back. That, and the ECS registry, possibly connecting the ship to the 22nd century Earth organization.

ECS stands for Eysium Confederacy Shipping.

The Eysium Confederacy joined the Federation in 2231 and soon began contracting Terrestrial orbital shipyards to construct their cargo ships. They move freight all over the Federation and their captains are known to take short cuts through the wrong people territory to save time and money.

If the ECS registry is legit and not an invention of the Ency, it's a really cool nod to ENT.
Is the secondary hull really built into the saucer and not like the one on the original concept art? Click!

Supposedly so; I have only heard a description, not seen the beast itself. Although we can see from the movie already that the stern of the saucer is different from the concept art, with a single center block rather than two side blocks. And of course the nacelle aesthetic was changed from TOS to Kelvin.

Have we seen ECS numbers before? The Fortunate CGI model appears to have just the name, without prefix. The Horizon model has ECS preceding the name, but no number.

The Fortunate's registry, ECS-2801, was not on the CGI but could be seen on the physical sets of the cargo bays, if I remember correctly.

While the Maru's registry is a nice nod, it's a bit anachronistic for a 23rd century ship that looked about the same age as the rest of the fleet. Especially with such a low ECS registry number.

Then there's the matter of the prefix. In the movie, the ship was called USS Kobayashi Maru, which is at odds with the CGI. The prime timeline Kobayashi Maru didn't have the USS prefix, for what it's worth.

Which, interestingly, seems to have been directly inspired by this 1983 design by Roger Sørenson and Starstation Aurora.

Here's another descendant of that original, secondary-hull-featuring shape. Different era, but plenty of specific Eaves detail faithfully reproduced:

We basically have a nice spread of era variations on the theme, then: early 23rd, TOS, TOS movies... Anybody know of any TNG style artwork? It's sort of curious that the "real" design has eluded publicity for so long, or that "official" CG images of all the new ships have not been revealed, just fan attempts at reproductions.

Yeah I really wish I could find official orthos of this one. Been looking for years without success. :(

Yeah, that's from the good old Flare Forum. A crisper scan would probably be possible, if only somebody decided to buy the book. (Although there are good arguments against doing that, I guess.)

Now we're struck with the fact that Kelvin universe dialogue calls her "USS Kobayashi Maru" while she has ECS rather than NCC registry prefix... The same as with "USS Raven", only worse, since the Raven at least had the "federal" N letter in her NAR prefix. Oh, well.

Pretty much so. Even the ridge atop (and below?) is apparently reproduced. The rest is pure Roger Sorensen - save perhaps for that strange thingamabob at the extreme stern. Pretty complex shapes there; is it supposed to look like something specific, or just interesting?

    Tractor beam assembly?

Where are all the workbees kept for this ship, it would need a lot to move all the freight around.
