Kevin Smith (Sort of) Reviews Star Trek

    August 22, 2008
    by Anthony Pascale

TrekMovie previously reported that JJ Abrams has completed a first rough cut of his Star Trek movie and now it appears that he is showing it off. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back director Kevin Smith was a guest on KROQ’s Kevin and Bean show this morning and the subject of the new Star Trek movie came up with Smith giving a review of a movie in a roundabout way.

Smith: I saw a movie last night that I cannot talk about.

    Host: Was it good?

    Smith: It was phenomenal.

Host: Any stars, any break out stars, and do they trek?

Smith: The stars absolutely trek in this film. It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn’t need to be worried–about this film I cannot talk about…It was in very capable hands. The director did a phenomenal job–the director and his crew. Top notch cast and the guy that plays the lead is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful. He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy.

Even though he couldn't say anything detailed, it's still good to hear that he liked it so much.

If the buzz is any indicator, this movie's going to make some huge bank. ;)

I just read the interview over at Trekmovie.com and I got really, really excited! I dunno why, but for some reason I really, really trust Kevin Smith's opinion. People can say what they want about him, but I tend to find that I usually agree with what he thinks (in regards to movies). Having read that interview, I am just that much more excited to see this movie!

    I hope so.

After the crapness of INS, NEM, VOY and ENT, Star Trek really needs a boost.

I'm hoping that before September is over we'll know for certain when the trailer is going to be out. I'm guessing December or January, but hoping it could be before Thanksgiving.

This is exciting. I trust Kevin Smith's opinion, but then again I trust Leonard Nimoy's even more and I've been excited ever since he said, "this is going to be a great movie and I don't say that lightly."

I wonder who he meant when he said:

"...the guy that plays the lead is an instant star..."

    Quinto? Pine?

I get the impression he was talking about Pine there. Quinto is already relatively well known whereas Pine is not, and Smith is a fan of Heroes I believe, so I doubt he would need convincing about Quinto's abilities.

    ^^ That makes sense...thanks.

I figured he meant Pine. The host seems to think the same thing as the next question out of his mouth is (to paraphrase) "How does one out-Shatner Shatner ?". I interpreted Kevin's "I don't know what you're talking about" as mere faux-confusion in an attempt to dance around the subject rather than an indication that Kirk was not the focus of the initial comment.

^^To be honest, I didn't read the whole article...shame on me.
    I agree with your interpretation.

Kevin Smith is the worst kind of fanboy: the kind with exposure. Plus, he's not going to come out and say anything bad. It's just not cool to bad mouth a movie made by your peers. Isn't this the guy that praised the Daredevil movie in advance?
